COURSE PRE-REQUISITE: ENG 111
COURSE GOAL
The course is designed to help students develop advanced writing and basic library research skills that will enable them to meet the challenges of scholarly work in assignments and term papers. By the end of the course, they should be able to produce a well-researched paper.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course the student should:
1. Develop skills in academic writing that will be useful for assignments in all courses.
2. Better organize thoughts.
3. Use APA style to make citations.
4. Produce a clear and well-written research paper.
5. Develop a personal style of writing.
COURSE CONTENT
The course focuses on:
1. Definition of writing and academic writing
2. Relationship between academic writing and other disciplines
3. Characteristics and types of academic writing
4. Choosing a topic
5. Using the library and other sources of information
6. Parts of a research paper (thesis statement, outline etc)
7. Mechanics (language, grammar sentence structure, punctuation, spelling paragraph development, types of writing).
8. Format of academic papers (numbering systems and reference list)
CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES
1. Classroom activities will include lectures, discussions, writing tasks and library research.
2. Assessment will be in the form of continuous assessment tests (CATS) and a final paper which is due at the end of the semester.3.
3. The writing project at the end of semester MUST be given to the course lecturer PERSONALLY on or

CATS 30% (CAT 1 - 10%, 2 Essays 20%)
