Study skills or study strategies are approaches applied to learning. They are generally critical to success in school, considered essential for acquiring good grades, and useful for learning throughout one's life. There are arrays of study skills, which may tackle the process of organizing and taking in new information, retaining information, or dealing with assessments. They include mnemonics, which aid the retention of lists of information, effective reading and concentration techniques, as well as efficient note taking. Study Skills are discrete techniques that can be learned, usually in a short time, and applied to all or most fields of study. They must therefore be distinguished from strategies that are specific to a particular field of study e.g. music or technology, and from abilities inherent in the student, such as aspects of intelligence or learning styles.

Fortunately, working out a simple time management system and devising effective study strategies is less about gimmicks than it is about common sense. Follow these simple steps, and we can guarantee that you'll be well on your way to a productive life in college.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Our study will conclude by discussing how this research has taught us better study habits, which will most certainly improve my academic performance overall, as well as what possible educational implications the research studies had. What are study skills? According to Wikipedia (2009), study skills are "abilities and approaches to learning." Sometimes, study skills are also called "study strategies." In the textbook, Ormrod (2008) defines study strategies as an "intentional use of one or more cognitive processes to accomplish a particular task”. These "abilities and approaches" or "cognitive processes" are the specific study skills in which we engage. Some examples of study skills from both these textbook (Ormrod, 2008) and the research studies that follow (Igo, Bruning, & McCrudden, 2005; Onwuegbuzie, Slate, & Schwartz, 2001; Peverly, Brobst, Graham, & Shaw, 2003; Peverly et al., 2007; Robinson et al., 2006) are note-taking, reading, summarizing, organizing, identifying important information, and meaningful learning and elaboration. The first five listed are relatively common sense. However, Ormrod (2008) identifies meaningful learning and elaboration as, "processes that involve making connections between new information and the things we already know, and processes that clearly facilitate our learning as we study". This reminds us of the elaboration concept mentioned in previous chapters of Ormrod, (2008), which use the term to relate to better memory. This makes perfect sense that it is incorporated into a study skill, since the essence of studying lies in how well we remember the material.
