Study Hall?
The idea of study hall is short and simple: a period that students can take for themselves to study or do any other activity they would like. Study hall is a part of most high school schedules today. However, some people argue wether the concept of study hall is legit and not just a waste of time. They question if students are in fact using study hall for academical purposes and not as just another free period. Nonetheless, Study hall is beneficial and can have a positive affect on students, if administrated under the right circumstances. The period can be used as extra time to finish work and relax before resuming classes. It also provides students with the chance to better understand topics for certain classes. Study hall also gives students opportunity to take full advantage of the time they have after school.
Good grades come with good effort, and good effort requires good work. Study Hall can give students the opportunity to finish or start homework they might want done. Aisha Sisodiya’s article “Making the most of study hall” states, “study halls can be a useful break in the day allowing students to finish homework, study for an upcoming test, or simply relax listening to music and forget about the stress of classes”. This shows that with the right kind of people supervising the students actions, study hall can give time to students for not just completing homework but also relaxing and releasing stress. The Hardest part of school is keeping up with people expectations, but it is is even harder to keep up with your own expectations. So having some extra time can really boost self confidence and help students stay on track and ease their minds. Imagine a student that is struggling even though he tries his hardest to keep his grades up but is dancing on a razor blade and needs just one test with an exceptional grade to pass the class.
Due to an incomplete understanding of the topic, he is unsure wether he will be able to pass the test. But he is in luck. Before the period that he has to take the test, he has study hall. Study hall is a period in which students work and help each other in matters. The student now has extra time to ask one of his peers or teachers for help; help that can change the outcome of his test. John
Paul II Catholic High School incorporates study hall into the daily schedules of all school athletes . To find out wether their decision to include study hall was a good idea, the school had the students conduct a s survey about study hall. “71 percent of students strongly agreed or agreed that study hall helped their performance in school”. Study hall helped more than seventy percent of a group of students in just one school. if it were given to students all around the country it could cause dramatic changes in students academic performance nationwide.
According to the National Center for Education statistics, most high schools in the United states are almost seven hours long. Some are even longer for students that are required to take after school tutoring classes. This leaves students with very little to no time at all to enjoy their leisure time after school. By the time these students get home and finish homework, the sun has already set and there is noting left for them to do. If study hall was a part of their school day, students will have the opportunity to finish homework ahead of time which will leave them time

to go out with family or go play outside with their friends.
