The ‘Black Gold’ or coal is one of the most sought after resources across the world. It is expected to replace oil and petroleum as the biggest source of energy in the years to come. It is extensively used everywhere starting from the electricity sector, the steel industry to the households.Coal is the most important source of energy in India as well. For a developing country like India the energy supply system has considerable implications on the economy and vice versa. As is the case often, due to the growing population and economic development, the energy requirements are also soaring almost exponentially.
In India more than 54 % of the industrial energy requirement is derived from coal. When the entire energy demand is considered including non-industrial consumptions, the figure stands at a staggering 72 %. Moreover this consumption trend is still increasing and if the latest IEA report is to be believed then then consumption of coal will increase at a rate of about 2.8 % in at least the next decade.
