I was part of ELL for largest part of my education life and even though various peers were in it as well I felt out of place and struggled more in class. I needed extra support with reading and writing because it was a new language. It was hard to manage two contrasting language and I would not know what language to use, but when I started the third grade it was all English and I still was in the ELL program. As children learn a second language, Walqui brings out, there are individual, social and societal factors that the teacher should consider (2002). Some of these are linked to the native language of the student. Things that a teacher must take into account include the student’s proficiency in their native tongue. Additionally, how much academic knowledge the student has in their native tongue and the amount of prior knowledge the student has of the English language. “The more academically sophisticated the student is in their native language, knowledge, and abilities” can make a difference in how quickly and efficiently the student can learn in a second language (Walqui, 2002). Another consideration is the linguistic difference between the native and second language. Some languages, like English and Spanish use a similar register. While languages like Korean and Chinese use a different resister, creating a larger gap between the languages. This is knowledge that can be helpful when planning instruction.…

One in every nine students today speaks a native language other than English, and it has been predicted that within the next twenty years, non-English speaking students will become as common as one in every four students (Goldenberg 10). This raises a question of how to give students the best education while helping them learn English. There are two basic forms of education used in schools today for English language learners (ELLs), English immersion and bilingual programs. In an English immersion program most or all of the time is spent only learning English. In a bilingual Education programs students are taught content in the native language and learning English at the same time. The two main forms of bilingual education are traditional programs, the most common form of bilingual education which teaches in the native language and immerses ELLs in mainstream English classes after three years, and developmental bilingual education, which teaches in both the native language and English and lasts up to 7 years (Donagen 54). The idea behind English immersion is to gain English proficiency while bilingual education is to develop literacy in English and the native language.…

It is thought that if the language is not taught and maintained on a daily basis, the skill will not be maintained well enough to achieve fluency or even retain enough of the language to make the foreign language class worthwhile. It has been found that the prime years for language learning and retention are between zero and three years old, as Patricia Kuhl found when she worked on a study involving a group of children learning english in Madrid. It was found that by being exposed to english for an hour each day, the children in this specialized track Kuhl observed learned English much faster than the children in the normal Madrid language program. (Bach 1) This study showed that the first year of development is in fact extremely important to learning a second language, as once the one year marker is passed the child will start to have a more complex grasp of their mother language.…

From my own personal experience, I was taught English at a very young age. Since Spanish is my first language, I remember when I began kindergarten; I was put in to different classes with other kids. These classes were called ESL or English as a second Language. I really didn’t understand what was going on, because I did not speak English. But I knew that they were taking step by step approaches to teach us English because, I was really clueless when I would hear many of the other students speaking English. But within the first 2 years I was speaking English quite well. As my elementary school years went by I realized I had learned English. When people ask me, “how did you learn English?” I cannot really give them a simple answer because, by the time I was in 3rd grade I had already graduated from my ESL classes and I was already put back in to the regular classes. Now when I talk to my other friends that were in ESL with me, they all say that we didn’t really struggle learning English at a young age,…
