ANALYSIS
These lyrics stand out like words, even if taken away from their melody. “They don’t have to have any melody”, as Lennon puts it. The reason for this might be the alliteration of liquids along with “s”, which is perhaps one of the most distinctive features these lyrics hold. They add a “flow” to the lyrics. For instance, the first stanza holds words like “like”, “endless”, “slither”, “while”, “slip”, “pools”, etc. Alliteration of “s” sound adds to the swiftness of these already “flowing” lyrics. Words like “pass”, “across”, “universe”, “possessing” and “caressing”, all lie in the very first stanza. Moreover, we see some alliteration of the nasal sound “n” in the

    The Beatles song “Across the universe”, chosen words and lyrics helps identify the emotion that is being portrayed and also may give a visual image from the thoughts that are felt through the song. “Words are flying out like endless rain” this at the beginning of the song instantly indicates use of metaphor (rain) of water representing cleansing. It creates the thoughts being released and emptied out of the mind and going into the world. “Pools of sorrow, waves of joy”, is a juxtaposition showing opposite emotions being mixed together and revealing the author is confused and lost. The chorus of the song changes the emotions that were at first held, giving it more a convincing and cultural atmosphere. “Jai guru deva on, nothings gonna change my world “, adding in a second language and then a repetition in first spoken language shows to the listenerhow these thoughts are being spread into the universe and trying to convince everyone. Near the end of the song the words of thoughts have moved to the next stage. They are now already released from the mind but trying to travel. “Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes” This gives a very descriptive visual image for the listener to see/feel. Although the message being sent through is that millions of people are witnessing the author’s breakdown, it gives a sense of beauty being captured in slow motion, making it clearer to imagine. The song ends with repetition, first of “nothings gonna change my world” and then finishes with the repetition of “Jai guru deva”. The use of the repetition at the end of the song helps the listener to understand and except what the author’s message…

    "Here" and Back Again: A Look At Poetry Devices in Philip Larkin's "Here"

    Syntax structure is a key area in which the poem uses the format of words to convey the specific meanings between the four different stanzas. Three ways he is able to do this are listing, enjambment, and transitions between the different parts of the poem. Listing is one technique applied to the poem. In the second stanza, the poet begins to list off materialistic things that the people all around him want that he does not particularly care for: things such as “cheap suits, red kitchen-ware, sharp shoes, [and] iced lollies.” This use of sentence structure can lead the reader to assume the author holds the material wants of a large town in contempt, as he is clearly showing the things that others want while using a negative, almost chiding, tone. In addition, the listing done in the third stanza continues to bring out this negative aura even of smaller towns, of which Larkin describes to have “tattoo-shops, consulates, [and] grim headed-scarf wives.” The structure of listing in this stanza too shows that the poet knows just what it is about these two certain areas that he does not like, and he is not afraid to simply list them off one by one. The poet also uses enjambment in order to distinguish between the mentioned places, though not as clearly noticeable as the listing before it. The enjambed line 24’s transition cleanly into a new stanza beginning with line 25 is one of the clearest examples of the syntax at work, as well as of the distinct shifts between the many stanzas.. The poet’s tone has already shifted a few lines before this move, yet one still is able to feel the third stanza end and the fourth begin while still reading the same sentence.
