Subculturen in Amerika

3-3-2011

Ismail Pamuk & Boyd Meijer

Goths

Gothic style came about in the middle of the twelfth century. It was named after the Goths that controlled France during that time. It was developed as a result of Christian ideals. Christian leaders wanted big, tall, ornate churches to represent their strong faith. Later it was also used for non-religious buildings such as castles, walls, bridges, and gates. Citizens of the time period wanted striking, rich looking churches to represent their success and wealth, also leading to Gothic style. Common Gothic features include the pointed arch, the rib vault, buttresses, stained glass, and buildings that were shaped in the form of a cross. In addition, many cathedrals were heavily decorated with gargoyles, griffins, dragons, and other beastly, scary looking creatures. The Gothic style of architecture prevailed for around four hundred years. Over time Gothic developed into many similar styles. Enthusiasm for Gothic began to wane in the 1400’s, first in central Italy where it had never been very popular. However, in northern Europe Gothic style remained into the 16th century and beyond. (“Gothic Architecture”, 2013) There is sub culture today in the 21st century that consider themselves “Goth”. They wear dark clothes and make up and typically have a somber, morose attitude.…

The role and significance of sub-cultural style and its relationship to mainstream culture, moreover its political connotations have been an area of contention within sub-cultural theory. A seminal account of sub-cultural dynamics was postulated by Hebdige who drew on theories from disciplines diverse as Semiotics and Anthropology. Hebdige considered sub-cultural style to be grounded in the re-appropriation and subversion of the mainstream cultural order by alienated groups. This implies that style itself has a political dimension and that sub-cultural style is innately politically challenging (effectively or not) within the power relations of society. The task of this paper will be to shed further light on Hebdige’s theory of sub-cultural style as a form of re-appropriation and insubordination, building up from the theoretical antecedents to an application of the theory to punk subculture. Additionally, I will evaluate Hebdige’s thesis on the nature of sub-cultural style and its political dimensions.…

The culture I grew into since birth was the Brazilian culture. Soon the world I knew quickly changed when I relocated to the United States at age five, I then fell into the subculture of Brazilian-American. Which initially seemed like a drastic change but I am quick on social development so it did not take long for me to grasp the morals of Americans. The subculture of Brazilian-American consists of many Brazilian traditions I still have at home, and when in society I seem to take the role of almost the average American. The longer I live in this country the more I am affected by the common ethics practiced here, and it has since evolved into my life at home. Initially I only ate home-cooked Brazilian meals, but now you can often find my meals coming from American restaurants even at home. The American culture has influenced me to behave in an entirely different way. Many people ask in what way have my habits changed. My explanation is that in life in Brazil is completely different than here. Eating with my hands has become a norm for me, even though it is frowned upon in Brazil because it is seem as manners to always eat with silverware. The most noticeable difference is the sense of security an individual has in the United States. The government here has a huge sense of control of what its citizens do on a day to day basis. The government is very involved with the lives of the people, and it allows for a sense of security.…

In the 1960’s and 70’s, the article about Cohen’s folks devils and moral panic marked the emergence of a new and highly influential approach to youth and their behaviours in society, which was then referred to as youth subculture. The concept of subculture is important for people to understand the social lives of young people and what kind of message they want to convey in society and how they want to be understood. Over time, these subcultures acquired names and identities such as punks, skinheads, Goths and hipsters. They had a particular way of addressing the ideology the group go with and each member of the group had to stick to this ideology and style. This group of subculture helped to illustrate the many ways in which young people can be observed and understood in society. It was argued that structures of society such as social class inequality and power within this structure aided young people to negotiate and augment their own distinctive way to face those structures through symbolic of the group or ideology that the group shared within…
