The company that actually owned the rig was Transocean, who then rented out the vessel to BP for drilling use on the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig itself was designed and built in 2000 to Reading and Bates Falcon RBS-8D design specifications. The dynamically positioned semisubmersible was also referred to as a Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit or MODU. Water-rated to 10,000 feet and well-depth rated to 30,000 feet, the Deepwater Horizon was not surpassing its capacity in 2010 when it was drilling at water depth of only 5,000 feet and a well depth that never reached 20,000…

The Shallows explores the idea of technology’s evolution on our minds. The internet as it is today is constantly changing how we read, write and think. Nicholas Carr wants us to realize and see the effects this new technology is having on not just us, but our culture. How we think about knowledge, what we are gaining from it and losing. Essentially, The Shallows isn’t just about how we’re changing from technology, but how Carr implements deep reflection by emphasizing academic and cognitive research. To simply put, Carr has written a book with deep thought about shallow…

The Engineering Services industry is highly competitive and is comprised of many establishments. As reported in the 2007 United States (US) Economic Census, there are approximately 58,000 establishments (i.e. engineering firms) in the US that employ almost one million people, with revenues exceeding $180 Billion annually [ (2007 Economic Census, 2010) ]. Draglines fall into two broad categories: those that are based on standard, lifting cranes and the heavy units which have to be built on-site. Most crawler cranes with an added winch drum on the front can act as a dragline. These units (like other cranes) are designed to be dismantled and transported over the road on flatbed trailers. Draglines used in civil engineering are almost always of this smaller, crane type. These are used for road, port construction, pond and canal dredging, and as pile driving rigs. These types are built by crane manufacturers such as Linkbelt and Hyster.…

Environmental conditions underwater will affect the form of the structure, provision for ventilation and services. Underwater structure is a place where people who do not dive or do not swim can actually feel/experience the living underwater.
