Euthanasia is a divided topic in opinions as people have different views on different situations euthanasia could be used in. As 70% of Dutch surveyed would agree with the use of euthanasia while 90% of Dutch would go against the use in nursing homes.
One reason for the support of Euthanasia is that it’s a person right to decide when they die. If a person feels their life will not get any better and they are having difficulty coping and being able to live with their condition or disease they should be able to decide when to end their suffering. For example if a person relies on help everyday and cannot do anything for themselves and is immobile and they feel they don’t want to continue life they should be given the choice to end their life.
However one reason to oppose the use of euthanasia is that one of the reasons doctors are against euthanasia is that it is their job to try and protect and save a life. Doctors are there to save and try to prolong their patients’ life not to end it. Dr Peter Ravenscroft is a doctor opposed to euthanasia. Ravenscroft said "I value sitting with dying patients or holding their hands. It reminds me that life is a great mystery and we all share the characteristics of being human. We take part in all of life, including dying, but we are not masters of it." He said patients should be given palliative care which means it lessens pain and suffering and patients feel less afraid.
Another reason in support of euthanasia is it spares relatives the agony of having to watch their loved ones suffer and die a slow and painful death. This can leave relatives traumatised and depressed with seeing their loved ones in such pain and sadness. If a person is in such pain and suffering it would be morally wrong and cruel to let them suffer and live a prolonged life for no reason. This is even more wrong if their life would not get better and there is no chance of their condition improving or the pain lessing. The term
