Sulfur (Sulphureum)
The element I pick for my project is Sulfur (Sulphureum). The atomic number is 16, the atomic mass is 32.065, and it is located at period number 3, group number 16 and group name; Chalcogen. Sulfur is by far one of the tenth most abundant elements in the universe, the types of abundant elements in this universe would include of Hydrogen, helium, oxygen and more. Sulfur was founded or well convinced it was an element in around the 1777, by Antoine Lavoisier, who was a French nobleman and chemist. Antoine Lavoisier convince the rest of the scientific company that Sulfur is a element. Sulfur is made up of many common materials as stated in education.jlab.org “ galena (PbS), gypsum (CaSO4·2(H2O), pyrite (FeS2), sphalerite (ZnS or FeS), cinnabar (HgS), stibnite (Sb2S3), epsomite (MgSO4·7(H2O)), celestite (SrSO4) and barite (BaSO4)”. …show more content…
Sulfur has a bright yellow look and forms of large crystals. It has a type of smell as describe by manys as “ The scent of rotten eggs, burning matches and a secant of a skunk spray”. These scents are very ridiculous but many scientist believe it may be because of the sulfurous compounds. Sulfur odor is mostly produced when lit by a match. The uses of sulfur is very few or low uses as an element however Sulfur is important for a type of usage called Vulcanization. Vulcanization, as described in encyclopedia.com “ is the process of adding sulfur to rubber to make it stiff and hard. It keeps the rubber from melting as it gets warmer”. This means Vulcanization must be the use in which adding sulfur to rubber to make it more harder or
