Act 1 scene 1
Summary
Lucentio goes to Padua for university with his manservant Tranio. On their way, they stand aside to witness a family problem in Baptista’s house. Gremio and Hortensio who have fallen in love with Baptista’s younger daughter – Bianca tried to propose marriage to her. However, Baptista decrees that no one can marry her until his older daughter Katherina, who is the “shrew”, has a husband. Therefore, Gremio and Hortensio decide to forget the rivalry first and join forces to find a husband for Katherina. Lucentio, who is watching this event, has falling in love with Bianca as well. He exchanges his clothes and position with Tranio secretly, so he can present himself as a tutor to get close to Bianca.

Tranio – careful and observant (178-181) realizes immediately about what happened to Bianca Independent/thoughtful (25-40) not just follows/agrees what his master, gives own thoughts and opinion Royal (195-206) obeys Lucentio’s command and supports him with actions
Katherina – vixenish (61-65,102-104) she is easy to get angry, talk rudely not like a girl
Bianca – gentle and elegant (80-84) likes to read and study, has interest in instruments. She is a girl with courteous manners and graceful words. Respect her father.
Gremio and Hortensio – Spoony Haughty?(. Express straightly about their dislikes to Katherina)
