While watching a documentary called “An Apology to Elephants,” it is revealed that wild elephants migratory animals and travel long distances. These animals have the need for physical exercise. But the life in the circus is one that is always on the road. Elephants are kept in crate and are forced by ropes to stay put. This is the only option most of circus elephants have for physical activity, and without it they would go crazy. (“Apology to Elephants”)

Secondly, elephants that are in captivity usually develop some sort of disease. Most frequently, elephants contract a human strand of Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a disease that attacks your immune system and is highly contagious. So as people are passing this disease to elephants the elephants are passing it to other elephants and humans. This disease has caused many deaths of elephants in circuses. Also, many elephants suffer from painful foot and joint disease from not using their muscles as much as they would in the wild, standing on hard surfaces for too long, and standing in their own waste.

In our discussion on Friday, no one else read the book so I was stuck trying to piece together what they knew, what happened in the book, and how to write a decent report on what has happened so far. So far in the book, we read about Jacob living in the retirement home and coming in contact with a fellow who claims he carried water for elephants. Elderly Jacob flashes back to when he was twenty-three. His parents had just died in a car accident; he skipped out on his veterinarian final exam, and hops a train out of Norwich in hopes of finding work somewhere new. The train is for the “Benzini Brother’s Most Spectacular Show on Earth”. He joins the circus, does a variety of petty jobs until he lands in the circus…

Use of elephants as war animals has been dated back to as early as 331 BC by the Persians. King Darius the 111 of Persia was the first to use elephants in the battle of Guagamela, against Alexander the Great of Mecedon. Kind Darius' army consisted of 15 well trained Indian elephants which was used to frighten the opposition. War elephants were used in elephantry which involves a parade of elephants with military troops mounted on top. These elephants were used to charge at the enemy, separate their forces and inculcate a sense of fear in them. The many different attributes possessed by elephants made them useful in battles. Firstly Male elephants were used in the battlefield due to their aggressive nature. Female elephants were used for other purposes such as transportation and carrying of heavy loads. The massive…

I decided to take a chance on Sara Gruen’s novel Water for Elephants, after reading the rave reviews of the book posted on several social media sites by friends and acquaintances. The truth is, it is summer and I am desperate for a distraction away from my recent obsession with Grey’s Anatomy reruns fueled by Netflix’s instant queue. So I purchased the book and slowly began retreating from my computer screen that stole 42 minutes of my day as I sat captivated by Dr. Owen Hunt’s passionate kissing. Moreover, my favorite animals are elephants, so from the title I was intrigued.…

Approximately half way through the 335 paged book now, it has been pretty well illustrated how cruel circus conditions once were. Though PETA might argue how they still are, I doubt that the African native creatures known as elephants are still abused as much as Rosie is in the book. Since I’m indubitably not a sole advocate of animal compassion, part of the scrapbook will illustrate the notorious road of the circus industry.…

“Elephants now join an elite club of of social cooperators,” says Virginia Morell. Recent studies show that there are more species out there with cognitive skills nearing humans’. The experiment which proved this required elephants to use teamwork in order to complete a task. Once the remarkable results were in, three different takes on the experience were written: an article, a passage and a video. Although these three all convey the same subject matter, they present it differently; the article simplifies the information for the reader, the video summarizes the information and provides a visual for the reader, and finally the passage provides a more detailed and objective analysis of the experiment.…

When I was younger, I compared my grandfather to that of an elephant, 13 feet tall, 15,400 pounds, and a heart weighing up to 46 pounds. A big, broad, vulnerable creature, towering over the rest of the family. Ten months of hairy cell leukemia, a rare strand of the already rare strand of chronic lymphotic leukemia claiming his body made him so small, just skin and bones. My best friend sat 205 miles away over Skype and asked: “How do you get rid of an elephant in a room?” I imagined an elephant squeezing itself like a balloon into my nine-foot-tall living room. “You have to eat it,” she said, “Do you know how eat an elephant? One bite at a time.”…

Have you ever been to the circus and seen the amazing tricks the elephants and other animals do? They may look cool but these elephants aren’t born knowing how to do these tricks, they are tortured to learn them with whips, bullhooks, chains, bush knives, ear halters, and ropes to control them to do whatever the mahout (trainers) wants them to do. These wild animals are not meant to be tamed but to live a happy life in the wild.…

I see that you decided to read this, let’s hear some more cool facts about African Elephants. An African Elephant's trunk is about seven feet (two meters) long! Since African elephants live where the sun is usually blazing hot, they use their trunks to help them keep cool. First they squirt a trunkful of cool water over their bodies. Then they often follow that with a sprinkling of dust to create a protective layer of dirt on their skin. African Elephants pick up and spray dust…

The elephants kept in captivity in zoos and circuses have similarities to the African slaves of America. Firstly, the elephants are trained using a bullhook, which they are prodded and beaten with until the sight of it strikes fear in them. In order to force the elephant to perform the desired trick, the handler uses the bullhook to pull the elephant into position. Similarly, the slaveholders would use whips and other weapons to make a slave do what he or she was supposed to. At young ages, slaves would be “broken”, meaning they were beaten into a state of dehumanization. Additionally, both the elephant’s swaying and the slaves singing were ways for them to stay sane and pass the time. When the elephants sway, they are distracting themselves…

As usual a group of school children went for a visit at the zoo and as they were giving a demonstration of the new elephant, and the children were believing everything they were told about the great mammal. The lie came to an end when wind came along and the elephant was blown into the air by the treetops.…
