Late Gothic Annunciation in the Arena Chapel by Giotto Bondone
The artwork that I chose to analyze is Annunciation in the Arena Chapel by Giotto Bondone. The works of art were frescoes created between the years 1266-1377 in the late gothic style. The objective and reason for writing this paper is to communicate a formal analyses of the work including a visual description of what I see, as well as an iconographical analyses including the function of the work as well as its significance. When Scrovegni’s family made their fortune it was usual to charge excess interest when loaning money. However, later it was considered a sin so grave that it resulted in exclusion from the Christian community, and many early bankers were concerned that their trade would jeopardize their souls because of this. It has been suggested that Scrovegni built the chapel to make up for his father's sin. Enrico's father is one of the usurers encountered by Dante in the Seventh Circle of Hell. The chapel was attached to a palace built by Enrico Scrovegni, however it also it also served as a public area for functions related to the Feast of the Annunciation.
