I am a Development Assistant intern at the American Red Cross. I conduct basic research of potential donors, donor data entry, clerical data entry, and provide general office assistance. In five years I plan on pursuing my dream career as an Attraction's Executive of my own amusement park and waterpark. I always was a fan of amusement parks and waterparks but what pushed me in this direction was my first roller coaster experience on a roller coaster name The Alpengeist at Williamburg, VA Busch Gardens amusement park.
Jack Welch's leadership principles reminds me of my favorite leadership style Authentic leadership. "The following core attributes of authentic leaders:
• they understand their purpose;
• they have strong values …show more content…
about the right thing to do;
• they establish trusting relationships with others;
• they demonstrate self-discipline and act on their values; and,
• they are compassionate about their mission and act from their heart." (George, 2003).
The relative principles to me are mission with values and candor. "The mission announces exactly where you are going and the values describe the behaviors that will get you there." ( p.14). I have been planning my company's mission statement for awhile now and I have come up with some key points that I will like my company as well as my team to demonstrate. Overall, I want my mission statement to be simple and understandable. "Values are just behaviors ----- specific, nitty-gritty, and so descriptive they leave little to the imagination. People must be able to use them as marching order because they are the how of the mission, the means to the end ----- winning." (p. 17). As far as values, I will like for my team to see them as achievable, fun, and hopefully something that they could take and use outside of the workplace. I know that my business is about making my customers have fun and enjoy the park(s), but I also want my team to have fun at work as well.
"I call lack of candor the biggest dirty little secret in business...lack of candor basically blocks smart ideas, fast action and good people contributing all the stuff they've got." (p. 25). In Mr. Welch book winning he describes three ways that candor could lead to winning. Those three ways evolved conversing with people about the issues and how talking can lead to ideas of improvement or resolving those problem(s). And how a discussion allows everyone to learn and be open to communicate, ideas and approaches to handle a problem could be generated quickly, and that candor could also eliminate so much cost (unecessary paperwork and meetings). And that's how I would like to work with my team. For example, if I had a team member that was uncomfortable to run a roller coaster or some other form of equipment I would immediately ask them why, wait for their response, and look at the situation in their perspective and see what will be my next steps in resolving this concern. I had my own experiences where I was told to do something that I felt like was too much for me to handle and if I don't like being in a position where I was told to do something and I wasn't comfortable going forward with that duty I wouldn't expect my own employee to do it. "Without candor everyone saved face, and business lumbered along, the status quo was accepted.
Fake behavior was just a day at the office. And people with initiative gumption and guts were labeled troublesome or worse. (p. 31). There's a possibility that someone could have worked in a position for a while and expects to move up from their position because they believe they have a better purpose in another area in the business. Or if someone in the business feels as if there should be some sort of a change or approach to a situation that may improve the business success. In reference to Seth Godin, I would like to take the tribe approach in my company. "Tribes are about faith -- about belief in an idea and in a community. And they are grounded in respect and admiration for the leader of the tribe and for the other members as well." (p. 9). Eventhough this will be my company, it's not about me. Clear communication and understanding must go both ways. I must hear them out becuase if I don't, depending on the circumstances, the whole business will go down. Everyone in the business has a lead role. No one person has all the answers and that is why its important to have a team of people that are concerned about the business, themselves, and their team.
My hobbies are going shopping, traveling, and finding cool music to add to my playlist. I love watching reruns of television shows and old movies. Some of my favorite shows to watch are Living Single, The Facts of Life, Moesha, Girlfriends, and Hey Arnold. I also like to watch video game-plays on YouTube and every once in a while I'll play video
games.
