College for All: An American Dream
College for America
In a land that has been so horribly affected by the recessions and high unemployment rates, what if I could give you the perfect fix for your troubles. The solution will not only create more jobs, but it would also allow those that already have a job a way to move up the corporate ladder providing a better future for the families and for their society. Now this solution is not free, there will be upfront cost associated with the cure, but the longer term out come far outweighs the upfront front cost. While it might contribute to higher taxes for our country, a college education should …show more content…
be free for all high school graduates. With home grown college graduates, America will have a stronger workforce. The newest innovations will come from United States and the benefit of a college education will give access to more people, regardless of economic status. This answer also makes our education systems at the forefront of our minds. With college tuition paid with taxpayer dollars much like public school no longer will the standards of an individuals education be a crap shoot, depending on what district you are in , or what your background is. With America investing in our future through education, our country is teaching how to fish, not just giving the fish away so to speak. Let’s delve into the thought and explore the ramifications of a freely educated society.
The idea of free college tuition is not as controversial as one might think. Home grown college graduates will give America have a stronger workforce. Many careers in today require a higher degree of education. According to an article on PBS. ORG, “The evidence on earnings and college degrees is unequivocal: Employers continue to demand better-educated employees and are willing to pay more to get them. In the article, the difference between what a high school graduate earns and what a college graduate was referred to as “ The college wage premium”. The simple fact is with a college degree you make more. There is no doubt there is a gap between the earning value of a high school graduate and a college graduate. America heading up the ideal of a better future would champion the thought of more educated citizens. Many countries have decided to invest in their countrymen’s education.
Countries like Denmark and Germany have in recent years decided that not only would tuition be free but this benefit would also be afforded to international students. Germany recently outlawed the charging of tuition, in effort to make a commitment to the country standards of “universal education”. In a recent article on Think Progress . org, Dorothee Stapelfeldt., a senator for science in Hamburg, is quoted saying,“Tuition fees are unjust, they discourage young people who do not have a traditional academic family background from taking up study. It is a core task of politics to ensure that young women and men can study with a high quality standard free of charge in Germany.”
Many situations in the United States allow certain groups to take advantage of a free education. Starbucks just announced Starbucks College Achievement Plan . This plan allows Starbucks employees to receive full tuition reimbursement for each year of coursework they complete toward a bachelor’s degree. Freshmen and sophomores will receive a partial scholarship and need-based financial aid toward the foundational work of completing their degree. This benefit makes Starbucks as an employer in high …show more content…
demand.
California has the Master Plan for Higher Education. The Plan helps the top one-eighth of graduating high school seniors would be guaranteed a place at a campus of the University of California tuition-free. Other students receive some tier of tuition assistance as well.
Colleges like If the plans put in place by Starbucks, and California, and the country of Germany were implemented for all the United States , applicants for job openings will be on even playing field, where there talents will have to speak for themselves. No longer will talented applicants be unable to apply for positions because they do not have a college degree. A free college education, will give those that have received a degree already the ability to pursue continuing education.
Opponents to the “free education for all” push have many issues with the idea. Objectors that paying for higher education will raise cost on the national budget, and possibly lower the value of a college education. More people will have the coveted degree that most major employers are looking for so there will be nothing special . The average American’s taxes will increase to cover education. These are valid arguments. Lets examine these concerns.
First, the college degree will not be de-valued in anyway. The amount of high school graduates will not change. High school grads will still attend college with the same intentions as before, but more of them will be able to graduate. Without the added cost of attending college, more students will be able to continually focus on education, instead of the fee. This increases the likelihood of quality education, but also makes the possibility of the return on investment more likely. With superior education the student will be able to turn their degree into a career that will increase the economy and help with the quality of life for the student and our society.
Next is the concern of the cost to the already swollen national debt.
Having a free tuition for the high school graduate will be no different than the GI bill for the military. The will be cost associated with the change, can be offset with higher income levels from careers for those with higher education. State Colleges will not differ very much in funding, especially when partnered with Private Institution on step programs. Texas has already invested in step programs with Alamo Colleges.
Whatever path America chooses to travel, if the decision to invest in our country’s education is made, the United States is definitely headed on the right path. Now is the time to act! Lets make education a priority to ALL American students not just the precious few, before its too late. In closing, a quote from our 35th president sum it up, “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.”
