Summary: Darius Goes West

I’m a first year pharmacy student at Midwestern University. Dr. Gurney had shown us the Darius Goes West documentary and it was such an inspiration. Within the documentary I noticed how you and the crew had taken such good care of Darius and always made sure he was comfortable. On the trip, you all were his family caregivers meaning a relative or friend is responsible for attending to the daily needs of another person. My grandpa is someone who needs a family caregiver because his kidneys are failing and has recently been placed on hospice for kidney failure. My dad is his family caregiver and now he also has a caregiver who takes care of him. I understand the roles and dedication it takes to help someone when needed after watching my dad care for my grandpa. Darius and my
Death occurs every day, everyone handles it differently and that’s okay. We all are different, but to remember the person for who they are, what they did and the impact they made, should allow everyone to remember them forever. After viewing the documentary and finishing this course, there are many topics that will influence me on how I interact with patients as a pharmacy student. The main idea would treat everyone equally no matter what his or her culture may be. Darius was African American and no one cared of his culture and that’s how it should be. Within the health care profession, there are still patients who get less care because of where they come from and these health disparities need to come to an end. Patient centered care will always be a factor in how I interact with patients. Patient centered care is the number one thing to always keep in mind; you want the patients to know we are here to help them. I will never make patients feel as if they are wasting my time and always give them the time of day and answer all of their
