Ex-MBTA Employee Compensated $2.65m for Discrimination

An ex- employee of MBTA Green Line—who contended that she fell prey to racial discrimination at the time of being fired in 2013—was awarded over $2.6 million by a federal jury. However, lawyers for the transit agency argued that it was a verdict that “no reasonable jury” was able to reach.
Michelle Dimanche spent 13 years at the T when she was fired after enduring several years of “demeaning and insulting remarks,” as mentioned in her court papers, from her white supervisors—who gave less serious punishment to white employees of the company.

    Kimberly Ellerth worked in Burlington’s Chicago office from March 1993 through May 1994, first as a merchandising assistant and later as a sales representative. Theodore Slowik was a New York based Vice-President of sales and marketing, supervising Ellerth’s immediate supervisors.     Diversity discriminations were the internal issue of LAFD for so many years. A heavy price has had paid by LAFD for the lawsuits. In 2007, women constituted 2.6 percent, numbering approximately 95 out of 3,562 firefighters of the LAFD.
