In his article What Does Immigration Actually Cost Us by Thomas B. Edsall he shows us the ups and downs to immigrants in our country. Edsall does a good job of explaining both sides the democratic and republican views of this argument. He shows us some of the benefits for business. Edsall states the main benefit of immigrants in our country the benefit is for businesses. Edsall explains how the fact that immigrants will work for less money making the business more profitable for the owners and investors. There is a downside to this as Edsall says they are taking positions that Americans can be doing basically they are making it more of a challenge to get jobs. More downsides highlighted by Edsall shows the estimated costs of supporting the…
In conclusion, I strongly feel that Americans could greatly benefit from adopting some of the immigrant customs discussed in The Immigrant Advantage. Kolker herself could be used as a role model or example for how a family could benefit from some of these traditions, from the money saving habits of the Money Club to the ease of dinner preparation using the Com Thang. I wholeheartedly plan on attempting to make use of available family members whenever it comes time to introducing my child to the world. The knowledge and love that an older family member would be capable of introducing into our home could easily prove invaluable. I also hope that by the time that my children are entering into their college years that I would be able to provide…
Ever since this country was first discovered and settled, people from countries all over the world left their homelands and migrated to the “New World”. People from Spain, Germany, France, England and Asia traveled great distances to reach a new land of opportunity, to perhaps escape religious persecution or tyrant rulers. For centuries America has been viewed as a place for a fresh start, a place where anybody can come and begin a new life and follow their hopes and dreams. Even today people come to America for the exact same reasons that they did all those years before. However unlike the immigration of our ancestors, the immigrants of today aren’t able to just come here and do what they want without anybody noticing. Today most people view immigration as a problem to the United States. One of the most easily recognizable groups of today’s immigrants comes from Mexico. The Mexican immigrants often come here for better economic and living opportunities than they had at home. But no matter how much these immigrants want to better their lives for themselves and their families, most Americans feel that they are trouble and a drain on our resources. Despite what many think, the Mexican immigrants are helping our nation. The immigrants take many low end jobs that Americans do not want or are over qualified for, they can also boost our economy with the money they earn from working, and they diversify the nation. Immigration does and will contribute to a better America.…
The main question is whether or not immigrants help or hurt society. They bring economics gain, educational beneficials, and jobs. Although they are negatively viewed by others, they benefit the country a…
It was a pleasure to attend the lecture titled “The Economic Contribution of Immigration in America” by Dr. Alfonso Morales. As a Latina I am always happy to attend a lecture that is a part of the Latino Heritage Lecture Series. I strongly believe it is important to learn about different cultures, and these lectures are always very informative. For this lecture, I was especially excited to hear Dr. Morales discuss not only the economic contributions of immigration but also the more culturally inclined aspects of immigration. I found that even though his lecture was titled the “economic contributions of immigration”, he strongly emphasized more life enriching aspects like diversity and culture.…
How and why did Europeans come to America, and what happened as they settled into…
Immigration has caused many concerns for Americans, as this is an ongoing issue that is very controversial. Many politicians argue that an open door policy creates a higher rate for crime and threat upon the U.S citizens. For example, “The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States suggest that loose immigration policy can allow enemies of the country in too easily” (Unit 8 Lecture 1: Immigration). Also, many claim that allowing immigrants into the United States harms the economy, especially with unemployment. Certainly this can be a downfall to an open door policy; as immigrants are assuming jobs that Americans could fill. I also thought this was a big disadvantage because business will be more willing to hire the immigrants…
Immigration is good for the economy. Despite all the fuss about immigrants stealing jobs, immigration actually provides a benefit to the economy, whether those immigrants crossed the border legally or not. Why you ask? Because of what economists call the specialization of labor. As Jonathan Hoenig, proprietor of the Capitalist Pig blog, explains: “The fact that foreigners are eager to pick crops, clean houses, bus tables and produce allows more of us to afford cheaper food and better services, affording us even more wealth to enjoy and invest. It’s not the immigrants, but the taxes, spending and entitlements (most of which immigrants don’t even receive) that have drained the economy dry.”…
I think immigrants play an important role in America. They help build and strengthen America's economy. Immigrants help the economy by creating their own jobs. They work in all types of occupations. They are teachers, scientists, engineers, and construction workers. Every immigrant creates 1.2 local jobs for local workers, raises wages for native workers, and attracts native-born workers from elsewhere in the country. Overall, immigrants improve economy by creating their own business or working in difficult construction places. In addition to improving America’s economy, immigrants make the country more open-minded to new possibilities. America have diverse populations with different beliefs and culture. This means that opinions aren't limited…
The social impact of immigration has usually been negative. Immigrants are aware they aren’t welcome in “the land of the free” and are starting to feel as if they are being pushed out even if they have obtained US citizenship. For a long time “natives” of this country have claimed illegal immigrants are trying or have stolen all the jobs even though they’re jobs the “natives” don’t want to do. The social consequences of immigration are usually the cause for conversation and debate because “natives” view them as the reason for many problems. Things such as lack of jobs, a rise in crime, and the overall reason “natives” can’t live the life they want is all pinned on immigration. I don’t think that the problem is immigration I think it is a matter of who is immigrating and will they conform. By conform I mean get rid of all the cultural aspects that make them unique, like their religion or their clothing choices. Nativism is and will always be the main problem with immigration and nothing…
Since 2001, when September 11th happened, many people in the United States have developed a fear of allowing immigrants into the U.S. It went to levels of border control and more. Therefore some judge that immigration is a threat to the U.S. They should not consider that because everything that occurs is not due to immigrants. The government can stop illegal immigration right now but would it not affect the U.S. more to do so? Restrictionists claim that large-scale immigration-legal and illegal-has depressed wages, burdened government resources, and acted as a net drain on the economy. Thus, if immigration was eliminated, the U.S. would have fewer workers. With a reduction of workers, money would be less therefore, causing the economy to plunge. People come to the U.S. to work and make a living, why would the government want to stop that? “If Americans would simply cut their own grass, clean their own houses, and care for their own children, there would be no need for immigrant labors”. But even if this were true, the overall economy would hardly benefit from having fewer workers. Without immigrants, the economy would not flow smoothly because the workers make the jobs and economy better. Third world immigration is not a threat to America’s way of life because immigrants work, immigrants participate.…
Does immigration help or hurt the U.S. economy? It sounds like a simple enough question. Immigration in recent decades has significantly increased the presence of offshore workers in the United States. The impact of these immigrants on the U.S. economy is hotly debated. Sometimes immigration and globalization have often been described as economic threats. The truth, however, is more complex. The most important conclusion that emerges is as follows: The studies uniformly show that immigrants do not increase the rate of native unemployment in the aggregate. Actually, the continuing arrival of immigrants to American shores is encouraging business activity here, thereby producing more jobs. A misconception of some policymakers is that each immigrant…
For decades, immigration has been one of the biggest issues in America’s society. Their has been big debates on whether it has really helped America or if it has really been the reason for its downfall.…
The latte reason why immigrants should be allowed in the U.S is because when the U.S.A was growing many people from different countries around the world came and settled here. When they came, they brought their food, culture, and religion with them. These immigrants spread their culture from generation to generation until these different cultures made the U.S what it is today, a melting pot of cultures. As the spreading of cultures increased it became a part of us, people from different cultures trying new food that are totally from another culture, and that is what makes America special. I think that we should thank immigrants for what they brought and how they spread their culture, instead of kicking them out of the U.S. If the U.S ban the…
Take me for example I would not even be here if immigrates were not a loud over here. My dad is from Trinidad and was lively here on a temporary work visa. Now he has a green card which took him forever to get that card. immigrant to enter the United States, he or she must have a one to two-year processing time, a three hundred and ten dollar fee, and a ten page form stating their reasons for entering the U.S. Most immigrants do not want or can find time to go through this process. Instead, they could come into the U.S. illegally and still receive a job without a problem. Immigrants help America prosper by increasing the purchasing of goods. This in turn makes the economy grow by demanding more jobs. Immigrants help America flourish and create a wide variety of people living the American dream as one nation. The U.S. borders can never be sealed, because millions of people are seeking ways to support their families, so will come to where jobs are available. Furthermore, American businesses want and need these workers. While the…
