It is my privilege to take this opportunity to recommend Dr. Juan Pablo Ortega for a position in Internal Medicine. I have known Dr. Ortega for about 2 months during his observership in the Lymphoma/Myeloma Department at MD Anderson Cancer Center. During this time, I have seen firsthand the dedication Dr. Ortega possessed. He is on the right track to being an outstanding internist who values the advice of his peers. He has a clear vision of where he wants to be and dedicates much of his time and energy to his success. He is very open to discussing his goals of becoming an Internist and later pursuing a fellowship either in Nephrology or Endocrinology.…

Ben Carson: gifted, intellectual, and one of the most talented surgeons of his generation. Those are just a few words to describe the well-renown and inspiring Dr. Ben Carson. Unfortunately, people didn’t always use these words to describe the talented surgeon. At a young age Ben Carson was forced to overcome obstacles in school. Carson struggled academically throughout elementary school, and was often referred to as the “class dummy”. Carson began to rise to the top in middle and throughout high school, and he eventually graduated high school with honors. The talented young black man went on to attend Yale University with a scholarship, earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. After Yale, Carson went into medical school at the University of Michigan, where he specialized in neurosurgery. One writer describes Carson’s life obstacles as inspiring, “The lessons imparted by Dr. Carson are inspiring because they are an echo of his own life. He faced more than his share of hard knocks on the rough necked streets of Detroit” (BASU).…

After reading through the article “My New Nose” (181-186)it really showed to me and explained to me how big the pressure is on men. After hearing Barden’s story, on how he had the plastic surgery made me realize the pressure that is really put on men. That was a real shocker to me because before I had never heard a common male getting cosmetics plastic surgery before. I have only heard of movie stars and just celebrities getting cosmetic surgery before. “I noticed something: I stopped looking at the nose, almost as soon as it arrived. It immediately stopped being the focused of my face.”…

I was able to remove sutures on patients, cleaned instruments and exam room, rooming patients into the exam room and chart, called in prescriptions to the pharmacies, called patients for their surgery check in times. I even had the opportunity to watch Dr. McNamara exam on of our patients. It really opened my eyes and realized Dr. McNamara is definitely an orthopedic specialist. First of all; what is gender reassignment surgery? This is a very complex question with many answers, so I’d like to examine total surgery. Total gender reassignment surgery consists of 2 parts, ‘top surgery’ where the chest is augmented to resemble a more gender appropriate physique. Meaning either breast implantation or breast removal. The second part is ‘bottom surgery’ where the genitals are fashioned to match the desired sex. Genetic men are castrated and then the tissue is formed to resemble the external vagina, also called a vaginoplasty (Sharma, Damayanti; Dahiya, Krishna; Chechi, Kunika; Sirohiwal, Daya, Jun2008). Genetic females are given a hysterectomy and then a “groin-flap” technique is used to form a penis from present external tissue (Phillips). This procedure is called a phalloplasty (Leriche, Albert; Timsit, Marc-Olivier; Morel-Journel, Nicolas; Bouillot, André; Dembele, Diala; Ruffion, Alain, may2008). But before any of this can take place a patient must first follow certain social changes. These include therapy for a number of years, publicly cross dressing full time for a number of years, as well as hormone therapy (Phillips).…
