In Godzilla’s Footprint, author Steve Ryfle begins by stating that the film Godzilla was not released to the Unites States until 2004, fifty years after the original release in Japan. Ryfle goes on to quote critics that were flabbergasted by the contrast of two films - the original Japanese film with its primitive special effects and recollection of the horrific aftermath of the atomic bombings, versus the re-cut, copy and pasted version showed to the United states as a monster-mash entertainment film.…

In this literacy narrative, Blogs Are Not Pseudo-Diaries by Stacy Yi, Stacy talks about her experiences writing about her time spent in the Dominican Republic the summer after she graduated high school. The thesis statement of this narrative is “Far more interesting, though, was my hands-on education in the possibilities of travel journalism, and the freedom that comes with disregarding expectations.” Stacy talks about how there were lots of people who wanted to be kept up to date with her experiences while she was in the Dominican so she set up a blog where she could easily do so. At first she wrote mainly about how she was enjoying her time, posted some pictures, and wrote about missing home, the things she thought she should be writing about. Things she thought people wanted to read about. Stacy began to grow bored with what she was writing and the views on her posts were dwindling, she could tell her readers were becoming bored as well. Soon she stopped posting all together, she thought it was pointless. One day, she had a conversation with the oldest daughter of her host family and she knew she wanted to write about her and Stacy decided to post it. She started posting about local soccer games, restaurant reviews, disagreements she had with members of the family, things she really liked to write about. She felt better about the things she was writing, she felt satisfied. Stacy felt that writing day to day posts would provide a lot of information but not capture the feel of her trip to the Dominican. She felt that to make a good record of her trip she needed to write about things were relevant to her trip and in ways that fir the experiences she had.…

The setting that I chose to observe is a Sunday morning Methodist Church service that included a baptism. It is Sunday morning at 6am and the church is pretty crowded. The candidates that are awaiting baptism are lined up on the front pew of the church; and they are all dressed in white. The reverend is speaking at the front of the church and he is dressed in white as well. The candidates are of a mixed crowd consisting of men, woman, teens, boys and girls.…

During this clinical rotation, I was able to observe vital sign monitors being used by many of the infants. These vital sign monitors provide a continuous display of the patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, respirations, pulse, as well as oxygen saturations. Incubators and Isolettes were being used by some infants in order to provide and maintain a controlled environment which protects the infant from temperature changes, and the continuous high decibel sound of alarms and ventilators. Isolettes provide controlled temperatures and humidity in order to ensure that a thermo-neutral zone is maintained. Many infants were provided phototherapy due to high levels of bilirubin. Mechanical ventilators were utilized via continuous positive airway pressure…

According to the text, descriptive research is defined as a type of method in which a researcher or public official closely observes someone. With the data collected, they can then describe what is being observed without interrupting how the person is behaving. In relation to the topic of school shootings, the researcher would have to take into consideration many different aspects. The time frame leading up to the crime and after is a very crucial point in the case. The researcher would have to find out the intent behind why the person decided to commit the crime. Also, did the individual have any serious mental health issues, family problems, a victim of bullying, or any type of discrimination.…

Conformity is behavior change designed to match the actions of others. During my research, I found many examples of conformitive behavior. I often related conformity to adolescents due to the fact that they usually do their best to try and fit in when it comes to group settings. This type of behavior can be seen in college students attending educational facilities away from home. Those that are in dorms tend to indulge in drinking even if they aren’t “big drinkers”. They do this to conform to that of others and to be included in the fun and try and fit in. One last example that I will discuss prior to getting into my own observation, was the study that was done my Crandall in 1988 which examined normative social influences involving bulimia in college sororities. Sororities are the true definition of conformity and those that don’t conform are usually not allowed to continue to pledge. In the particular sororities that were examined, Crandall found that it had its own norm when it came to the “right” amount of food to eat and the popularity within the sorority was associated with adhering to this norm. Those that wanted to be a part of the sororities needed to conform to the “norm” and fell into a bulimic state. These girls had to of known this was not healthy for them yet they wanted to continue to become of part of this group and follow the “norm” that was set out. To me, this is just ridiculous.…

The purpose of this study was to conduct observations, using two different methods, on children, between the ages of 4-5, to understand their emotional behaviors in a social and learning environment as well as determining which method of observation was more reliable. There are different methods of conducting observations, but two main ones include naturalistic observation and experimental observation. A naturalistic observation method is when a researcher studies a person or group in their natural environment or setting; the behavior that is observed is one that occurs in a person’s everyday life. In contrast, an experimental observation method is when a researcher is studying a specific behavior in a laboratory-like environment.…

I was able to observe the members of the Oklahoma International Seventh-day Adventist Church during three church services and fellowships for my observation project. During this time, I focused on three main points: their justification for their particular set of beliefs, what they believe sets them apart from the beliefs of other denominations, and if there are any old belief systems that no longer apply to the modern world. Seventh-day Adventists are a group of Christians that worship on the Saturday, the seventh day. They believe that their day of worship is correct due to the fourth commandment in the Bible. The fourth commandment commands people to keep the seventh day, Sabbath holy and to honor it. It is a day set aside to focus completely on God. During this observation I was introduced to a new concept of "righteousness by faith". Seventh-day Adventists believe this distinguishes them from all other religions and denominations. Righteousness by Faith consists of three parts: repentance, faith in God for atonement of sins, and grace that allows people to obey the laws of God. When I asked if…

Living in a world where it is foreign to be colored was hard for many people of this nature in the 1920s. For Zora Neale Hurston, this was not a challenge at all. This high-spirited girl gives an explanation of how it felt to be, “...like a brown paper bag of miscellany propped against a wall” (Hurston 197). Written by Hurston herself, “How It Feels To Be Colored” gives us a humorous, sarcastic-ridden view of what her childhood was like from her home in the colored town of Eatonville to her adulthood, surrounded by people of other races. Across the essay Hurston gives her audience a few examples of differences between the people she encounters. She explains the cultural and racial differences in small things, such as music, as well as the ever present feeling of being different, no matter whether you are the minority or majority. Throughout her journey, Zora is never phased by how others view her appearance. She knows who she truly is and that is all that matters to her.…

In “Dealing with Feelings,” an article excerpted from a college textbook “Communicate!,” the author Rudolph F. Verderber indicates the best way to deal with feelings is by describing them rather than withholding or displaying them. The author explains, first, withholding feelings, hiding them inside and not giving any clue to their existence, is an inappropriate way of dealing with feelings. Psychologists believe that when people withhold feelings, they can cause physical problems as well as psychological problems. However, when facing an inconsequential situation like being bothered by a stranger at a party, withholding feelings can be considered appropriate way. Second, displaying feelings – that is, expressing feelings with physical reaction, considered an appropriate way when the feelings you experience are positive. On the other hand, displays can be disadvantageous to communication when the feelings are negative although it may be good for you physically. The last one, describing feelings, which is considered the best way to manage the feelings, is putting your feeling into words in a moderate way. Thus, people can be taught to how to treat you in a right way. Besides, it increases positive communications when you interpret the feelings by words. For instance, if you tell Paul that you are flattered by his visiting, you are encouraging Paul to come visit you again; likewise, if you tell Cliff you are angry when he borrows your jacket without permission, Cliff is more likely to ask for the next time. Even though describing feelings is important, the author mentions that more and more people nowadays don’t describe their feelings and gives several reasons for that. The author also gives the steps to describing feelings; first, interpret your feelings properly and accurately by words, then state what triggered the feelings, and then make sure you indicate that the feelings are yours. It is easier to start by describing positive feelings, then negative…
