There are nine characters in the story. The Grandmother is the protagonist in the story. She lives with her son Bailey and his wife. They have three children, a baby, June Starr, and John Wesley. The two older children are not well behaved. There is also three other men in the story. One of the men is older. But they all three have a shady past.

At first, Bailey says no, that they will not stop. So the Grandmother tells them that the house has a secret panel. She was not telling the truth. However, it sure did peek the interest of the children, so they went. After they traveled down this dangerous dirt road, the grandmother realizes that the house she spoke about was not in Georgia after all. In fact, it was in Tennessee. Not wanting to upset her son, she keeps this information to herself. They ended up having rollover crash on the road.
As the family set on the side of this secluded road for another car to pass by. They noticed a car in the distance. One the car reached them and stopped, it was occupied by three men. The older man in the group was an escaped convict known as misfit. The grandmother had warned the family about misfit before they started on their trip.
