When I read “A Good Man Is Hard to Find,” by Flannery O’Connor, the image of the family’s road trip reminded me of a road trip that my family took with our old neighbors nine years ago. The road trip was from my house in Ohio, to Myrtle Beach, North Carolina. The day we left Ohio, there was a derecho. This made our departure time later than expected. We were now leaving at night, instead of in the morning. My brother and I decided to ride in separate cars because we were going to talk to each other through our new set of walkie talkies. We had fun with the walkie talkies for the first couple hours of the road trip. However, we had to turn them off since other people were sleeping. When I lived in Ohio, my house was in a neighborhood located right behind a park. It only took me two minutes to get to the park on my bike. I had many friends in the neighborhood, and we all liked to go to the park during the summer. One of my best friends lived in one of the houses that backed up to the park. Since we went to the park so often, her parents had a fence gate installed that created a passthrough from her backyard to the park. All the neighborhood kids thought that the fence gate was a better way to access the park, so we all started parking our bikes in her driveway, and then walking to the park through the gate. However, a few years after putting in the gate, the neighbors had a pool put in. They had to remove the gate for safety reasons, and we all had to go back to riding around the neighborhood to get into the park. When I read “Jesus Shaves,” by David Sedaris, the image of the foreign language class reminded me of my high school German class. At my high school we only had two options for foreign language, German or Spanish. I chose German because my sister had taken Spanish and told me that it was a very hard
