Summary Of A Separate Peace By John Knowles
Since we are writing an essay, we had multiple options. One of the options were to discuss how the setting of the novel helps reveal the character of Gene. Gene is found in different settings in the book that describe his character really well.
In the fiction book, A Separate peace by John Knowles, there is a character named Gene, which is also known as the narrator and protagonist. Accord to the book page 54, he talks about Devon, the school he went to when he was younger, he mentions the school being athletic. It seemed liked he wasn't into it. He even says Finny was more athletic than Gene. It also says that Finny was going to be in the Olympics, so there’s something else to prove that he wasn’t so athletic.

One of the most asked questions for A Separate Peace is: who exactly is the protagonist and antagonist? Most would agree that Gene is the protagonist, however is it Gene or Phineas that is the enemy? I believe that the real ‘bad guy’ in this book is Gene. He envied Phineas from the very beginning but didn’t admit it until a little later on. Whether it was getting away from trouble, having a natural athletic ability, or simply being modest and humble about things, Phineas seemed to have been better at almost everything.…

In his novel A Separate Peace, John Knowles portrays the narrator’s solemn feelings about the Devon school. Gene revisits the Devon school and reminisces about his past there. He realizes a constant state of fear he had at Devon, he says “Unfamiliar with the absence of fear and what that was like, I had not been able to identify its presence” (3). When he goes back to Devon there is still a fear he carries, that remerges as he comes back to the past he had “escaped”(4). Gene contrasts his fear in paragraph 5, he says “I felt fears echo, along with that I felt the unhinged, uncontrollable joy” (5). This quote symbolizes or seems to hint that the fear spread out during those days and when a small amount of joy came to Gene he was overcome by…

Maturity: One of the most prominent and outspoken theme in A Separate Peace is the struggle the young adult population must endure during their race to maturity from childhood. The reader can tell that it is difficult for the main characters to cope with the war, especially Finny, who refuses to admit the war actually exists, although deep down his true belief is that the war is more dangerous than ever. To be frank, the boys in the novel seem to have grown up in a very sheltered environment, and their maturity level is low to begin with. However, the constant pressure to become a man, join the army, and contribute to one’s country causes the race to maturity to be a key theme.…

Hear their point of view and get their judgment because it is not their life that is going to be affected as much as your future”. Why is it that human beings feel intimidated by others? Everyone has their own fears and insecurities. In A Separate Peace by John Knowles, the main character and the narrator, Gene Forrester feels a sense of inferiority to his best friend, Phineas (Finny). The novel A Separate Peace is a story about two best friends, Gene and Phineas (Finny), who both attend the Devon school in New Hampshire in 1942. Gene Forrester is an intellectual, confined, straight-laced seventeen year old, while Finny is an athletic free-spirit who isn't afraid to say what he thinks and is admired by everyone. The story is a flashback in which Gene recalls his fears and insecurities during the midst of the Second World War at the Devon school. Out of jealousy and the fear that Finny is trying to sabotage his studies, Gene shakes a tree branch that they were both standing on, and Finny falls out of the tree and shatters his leg. It is at that point where their relationship changes into more of a codependency which leads to them developing their own individual identities by living within their own illusion that World War II is a mere conspiracy. Finny dies suddenly during the operation on his broken leg , but Gene doesn't cry. He deals with the tragic news with a sort of tranquility because he believes that he is a part of Finny. Gene reflects on the constant enmity which takes over the present youth, and he believes only Finny was immune to this plague.…

“It is only the great hearted who can be true friends. The mean and cowardly can never know what true friendship means.” In other words, this occurred in A Separate Peace, by John Knowles when Gene shook the tree limb and knocked Finny off, Finny was nothing but nice to Gene; Gene Pretreated the friend ship because he was self-centered. For example, when I moved to Tennessee I meet a girl named Grace we were inseparable to each other. Grace and I spent day after day, week after week, at each others houses.…
