Summary Of A Star Is Made By Ericsson
In the article “ A Star is Made” is about how Anders Ericsson believes that you need to practice over and over again to become better at a skill. The article starts off by saying that elite soccer players are usually born in the first three months. They believed that because during the winter babies tend to have a higher oxygen capacitor that parents tend to conceive children during soccer mania. Which does not matter when they are born Ericsson says that its the amount of time and energy you put in something you get a greater outcome. Ericsson asked himself a question. “ when someone is very good at a given thing, what is it that actually makes him good?”, which led him to conduct an experiment. His experiment was on memory, he had a subject work for twenty hours on memorizing a series of numbers, the results were that the subject went from memorizing seven numbers to twenty, but Ericsson concluded that it wasn't up to the memorization it was about the moment of time you put into it and practice. By 200 hours the subject memorized more than eighty numbers. He was only able to do that was because of the of the time spend on it, which is called “ deliberate practice”. …show more content…

Ericsson also mentions you have to do something you will love because if not you won't put enough effort into it and would do a sloppy job. Many people tend to do what they do not like because they do not think they are good at something, but all you need is to practice more and put time into practicing every single day, that you need to set a

I recently re-watched Oprah Winfrey’s made for TV movie adaptation of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, and was very disappointed. I admire Ms. Winfrey immensely because of her inspirational rise to fame due to her persistent pursuit of excellence and because of her desire to leave something positive for the world, so I hesitate to be critical of her pet project. However, her version of this most profound and uplifting novel fell short of capturing Ms. Hurston’s excellence.…

This is due to the cut off for most sports at all levels, which is January 1st. As kids those who are born closer to the cut off tend to be more coordinated or have better control of their skills. This in turn, leads the coaches to pay more attention to them because they are seen as the “better” player. As they grow up the kids who are given more attention tend to practice more and improve at a faster pace. Which in the end, leads to most professional players to being born in the first three months of the year. I believe this applies to me personally because growing up I noticed that I didn’t have to practice as much as the other players to play well. This could possibly be because I was born in February. On the other hand, my brother was born in August. Even though he is fit, he always had to work hard or practice extra to be at the same level of his peers.…

I don't believe practice makes perfect, but I do believe you can get better by practicing. Also, I don't think you can ever fully master a skill. You can be really good or amazing at what you do, but not perfect. If it is a learned skill, perfection is based on opinion. Everyone’s perspective of perfect is different. For example at a gymnastics competition all three judges at each event have different perspectives of what perfect is. In baseball, the umpire has to judge the pitch whether it is a strike or not. So the pitcher tries to meet the umpire’s perspective of a perfect pitch.…

In Chapter One of David and Goliath, Gladwell tells how Vivek Ranadive and his daughter’s Junior High basketball team came out victorious against various teams. Even though his twelve-year old Anjali had never played basketball before, she tried her best to learn and worked hard to improve. Many of the other teams that the Redwood City, Ranadive’s team, had to face were more experienced with playing basketball, so Ranadive had to use an effective training method to allow the girls to do their best. To have the girls do the best they can do against a more experienced team, Ranadive trained his girls by “following a soccer strategy in practice,” by making them “run and run and run,” so they can be “more fit than the others” (29). By training them hard, it allowed them to do the best they could do because practice has adapt their body to more pressure and strength.…

Ralph Waldo Emerson once stated, "Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow." I've read the statement over and over in my head and I can't seem to agree with him because of my literal comprehension of the quote. If you have been able to master something in the first place, don't you have to grow from somewhere to get there? Personally, I have yet to master a particular thing in my hobbies and sports. Yet, I still feel as I am growing in those activities. For example track; I excel in the 100 meter sprint and I've been given a natural gift for it yet I haven't mastered it like Usain Bolt or Tyson Gay. Though I still feel as I am honestly growing as an athlete in the event. I also have a passion for photography…

“WHOA WHOA WHOA THIS IS BALONEY MAN!” that is something I say whenever I am frustrated. People have always told me sometimes the best way to learn something is through failure. People value things they have accomplished differently. Often the people whom are naturally adept at things do not realize how much of a struggle it can be for others. Many times when people have told me that if you are going to fall, fall forward. Do not let your insecurities, doubts, and pride get in the way of improving yourself. In brief, there can always be a way to improve yourself.…
