For their “trip”, the old couple dresses in all black, as if they are going to a funeral. They have been together for years, and they can read each other like a book. Jennie seems certain of this trip but as for Jeff he’s actually scared but will not admit it to himself or his wife. They both feel like as if life has nothing to
give them. They know they will eventually die.
Jennie as an individual appears more brave and certain of things. Jeff seems uncertain of things and thinks about what would happen. As you get older, once you reach a certain age you realize something. Some people began to realize that life has nothing more to give them, that they will eventually die and there is nothing after that. That’s what Jeff and Jennie realized, they didn’t want to die of old age, so they decided to go on a trip for a reason.
Jeff and Jennie get in the car and start heading toward the destination of their trip. After a while Jeff tells his wife he can’t go through with and it and that he’s scared. But Jennie tells him to go faster, she is not afraid, she has already made up her mind. Their car heads for the river and Jeff presses the gas and they land in the water. Later the car is above the water and both of them are no longer alive. Their “trip” was a suicide.
So as you can see Jennie was not afraid and was ready for the trip but as for Jeff he felt as if he couldn’t do it. But he loves her, they’ve been together for years. They live together, they die together. And they could not live without each other, so they both planned the trip together. They will always be together.
