Her family was a family of intellectual experience. They had owned a family magazine that was doing fairly well. During the start of World War I, Cannan had volunteered for the Oxford Voluntary Aid Detachment. She had also helped to publish government propaganda. For a month she had went down to Rouen, France to help to wounded soldiers and provided care to them. While her she had written her most known poem “Rouen”
After Volunteering she had begun to write her poetry books. In the year 1917 from her poetry book “In the war” she had wrote a poem called “After the War”. In this poem she talks about the women that wait at home not knowing if their husband or boyfriend will return to them once again. She talks about how the world was happy and beautiful before and how it so empty and barren after the war.
