Summary Of An Abundance Of Katherines By John Green

In An Abundance of Katherines by John Green, most of the story takes place in the real town of Gutshot, Tennessee. This is where the main character, Colin Singleton and his only friend Hassan Harbish, find themselves after a long road trip from Chicago to Gutshot. The setting affects the characters because it is where Colin eventually will eventually get a job with Hassan, find a girlfriend (not named Katherine) and where he will in general become happier again and finish his theorem(explained later). After going on a tour to see Archduke Franz Ferdinand’s body guided by soon-to-be friend Lindsey Lee Wells, they are invited by Lindsey’s mom Hollis back to their house for dinner. After eating, Both Hassan and Colin are invited to work for Hollis when she says, “I think y’all should work for me this summer… you’d be perfect for it.” (63) She also says “Five hundred dollars a week for both y’all, plus free room and board. You’re hired!” (64) so now that Colin is employed, he can do something other than think about his breakup with his girlfriend, which in time will make him happier.
Though it’s a sad thing for Lindsey, it’s a perfect time for her and Colin to date each other, because they’ve been flirting since Colin arrived and finally on page Colin says, ”Wow, my first Lindsey” to which Lindsey says, “My second Colin,” and as you can imagine, they kiss and are boyfriend and girlfriend. Since one of the main reasons Colin came to gutshot in the first place was to get over his old girlfriend, this was a way to do it.
