Ann Rinaldi has written many books for young teenagers, she is an Award winning author who writes stories of American history and makes them become real to the readers. She has written many other books such as A Break with Charity, A Ride into Morning, and Cast two Shadows, etc. She was born in New York City on August 27, 1934. In 1979, at the age of 45, she finished her first book. An Acquaintance with Darkness by Ann Rinaldi is about Emily Bransby, a 14-year old girl living in Washington DC at the time that President Lincoln was assassinated, when slaves we're being freed and people were all going crazy from all of the new changes going on. He told her that what he actually was doing was just taking dead bodies of people who didn't have a family to claim them (such as people who fought in war or random people who were unknown) so that he could learn more about the human body and become a better doctor, so that he would know how to treat more people with different diseases, and he explained that his wife had died from a sickness that he didn't know of and he couldn't do anything to help her. The way he gets the bodies is that he has people fake families of the unknown soldiers and then they have to give them the bodies and bring them to his laboratory. Anyway she found out later that Johnny Surrat had been a friend of John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated president Lincoln. So the police were searching for him all over America and later she got a letter from him saying that he was hiding in Canada and he had a spy in America telling him if he needed to come back or when it was safe. Well Johnny's sister (Annie) is Emily's best friend, and Annie's mom was sent to jail held ransom until her son came back. And they threatened to hang her if he didn't come back because she wouldn't tell where he was.
