In the article “Anthropologists
and Other Friends”, Deloria discusses the negative effects anthropologists have on the Indians. During the summer months’ anthropologists invade the Reservations in order to study the Indians. Many of these anthropologists believe the “real Indians” are dead, simply because they do not fit a certain stereotype. They believe Indians are supposed to be “food-gathering, berry-picking, semi-nomadic, fire-worshipping, high-plains-and-mountain-dwelling, horse riding, canoe-toting, bead-using, pottery-making, ribbon-coveting, wickiup- sheltered people.” Adding these stereotypes with government workshops, programs, camps, and other factors forced upon the Indians, caused an identity problem. Indians began to question themselves and their culture. Also while studying the Indians, the anthropologists never gave any assistance or acknowledged the Indians as people. The Indians were seen as mere subjects to study and understand. Several Indians were also facing financial, educational, and economic challenges. However, many anthropologists were not concerned. They were there to record observations, gain funding, and to send in a new wave of anthropologists.
