Based on the article, Art Matter written by Brian E. Fogarty, he states one of his reasons that art is another form of communication. in the hospital and how they were coping with mental illness. Although I am not an art critic, I can clearly see the hidden messages behind the wall of art that Byrd created. Byrd painted these pictures to focus on the effect after the war and how devastatingly these veterans live their lives in isolation of the institution's hallway. Two paintings that communicate and stand out the most to me was The Cave and Outer World. Byrd used oil on canvas to paint these pictures to express the hidden meaning of his artwork. As I observed these two paintings, I noticed how the effect of the after war had an emotional, psychological, and physical impact on their lives.
These paintings made my heart throbs as if there was a hammer pounding against my heart.
The sadness and emotion that Byrd express through his creation of art was beautifully done. The lines, shades and colors of these two paintings have communicated to me in a way where I can feel the sorrow, loneliness, suffer and struggle that the veterans had been through in the isolation of institution's hallway. When I looked at The Cave, all I could see was that living in the hospital is like living in the prison. It is like being trapped in your own minds because there is no way for you to get out of this place, and nowhere to escape from the sorrows that are trying to eat you alive. Thus, you lose the energy you have, and dark clouds forming upon your head like you lost against the world and given up your existent as a person. The veteran must feel this way too, being trapped in their own minds, lost and confused. This is why art matter. Because it can express the emotion that human being can not show or reveal to other. Art can communicate and reveal an astonishingly emotional and beautiful hidden message that no one can imagine of seeing or feeling. As a result, art is another form of communication because it can connect the emotion and idea of how the artist wanted the audience to feel when viewing their
artwork.
Artwork matter to me because I believe that art is usually created with strong emotion and that artist can transfer their emotion to their artwork. Just like Byrd, he transfer much emotion through his artwork and is very impressing of how I can feel his emotion through the creation of his artwork. To me, art is a beauty. It does not have to be well painted or drawn. Just by looking at Byrd beautiful painting give me an experience of emotion that nothing else can.
