assume, the first one it talks about the reason why you are here (college). Instructors think that you know what you majoring and you talked to adviser and counselors, therefore they think that you got your path ready and steady. But in reality sometimes they struggle, on section one paragraph six the last sentence of Assumptions of College Culture it says “Sometimes there are pressures from home to improve your income, to secure jobs, even though you might not be ready to take on the responsibilities of being a college student.” by an instructor for Cabrillo College, this quote explains how student are having difficult time on being a full-time college student and that they feel pressure to go to college because people want the student to go to college.
Assumptions of College Culture section two “You Are self-Directed” it adds more to the first one. The author explains how college student doesn't raise their hand when they have a question and often lead to instructors thinking that the student understands. In addition to that, you have to be motivated and not have a parent or someone telling you to do homework, wake up and etc. Instructor won't care if you come or have some problems as log they get the paycheck. It is up to you to stay motivated and do the task you're supposed to do.
Prerequisite skills are classes that are college level. In order to have prerequisite skills, you have to take a test and determine in whether you need more help in a subject. In colleges, they offer tutoring and classes for you to catch up and not to be put in college level when you still need help on the lower level. It's better for someone to start at the level they need than being in higher level and having difficulties most of the …show more content…
time.
The difference between high school and college.
High school is always on you on to do this be on time don't be absent. On the other hand, college won't care they won’t be on you saying go to class don't be late, they would just drop you out of that class. Instructors won't be your parent or an adviser that would always be on you telling you to do things. College instructors won't care about the personal life of students. This is some of the ways why college is different from high.
The different environment between high school and college classrooms is what section five talks about in the article. It talks about how students should behave and have discipline. Furthermore high school you have to attend even though you didn’t want to go, but in college is up to you to attend to class and you are the one in charge of your education. College classroom you don't have to ask permission to get out of a classroom, you just stand up and go. Transitioning from high school to college, there is more responsibility to carry upon oneself. It is also up to the student to maintain that
discipline.
I agree with this article because I’ve in some situations, for example on the first week an instructor told the students that she expect for them to be ready and have paper and pencil out. Since I already read the article it came first thing in mind that she assume for use to be ready and get the class going. Another reason why I agree because I know what high school environment was different from college. In the article of Assumptions of College Culture it says “One of the knotties assumption we make about you when you walk to class on the first day is that you know and understand the rituals of college classroom...” by an instructor at Cabrillo College I agree on this quote because I have experienced somethings he said but as a student point of view, that I entered and felt that the instructor knew what they were doing while I had no clue.
I agree with this article but I also disagree when he talks about how student won't succeed if he/she always has someone telling them to do this, have you done this. The reason why I disagree is because I do have my parents that still tells me to wake and I do but that isn't going to make me fall behind on college. As a matter of fact, I can be independent or dependent, I can stay motivated, and still succeed in college
To conclude this article does seem to help lots of college student who are going to be first year and have no clue on what to expect. Don't fear if your struggle in college as stated in the article there are many types of programs that are offered on your campus and you can always ask your instructor for help during office hours. Instructors will always assume that the student this or that but you gotta speak up and don't let the instructors assume. As a first-time college student, you'll experience knew different environment than on high school.
