Summary Of Battle Royal

What is motivation? It is a series of brave acts that don’t deter a character from achieving their goal. The protagonist in Battle Royal is an African American man who tries to find his place in the 1940’s society of racial tensions. The protagonist is determined to gain acceptance and equality from the white community. The protagonist has to earn and fight for the white man attention. He carries his speech and his head high, while he struggles to overcome his goals. The protagonist tries to achieve his grandfather’s dying wishes. The narrator’s grandfather states “ I want you to overcome em with yeses undermine em with grins, agree em to death and destruction,let em swoller you till they vomit or bust wide open.” In addition, his grandfather was informing him that he should get a customed to the white people way of living. Although the narrator was certain he was used to that lifestyle, he still wanted to make that statement very clear, in order to go far into succeeding.
He has strong motivations towards gaining acceptance in his society. Although he risked himself on the battle royal he did not give up. Instead he continued to practice his speech in his head, preparing himself for the presentation for the end of the battle.
