Summary Of Canyons By Gary Paulsen
“Canyons by Gary Paulsen was a well written story that people who like reading will enjoy.
“Canyons” takes place in the canyons in El Paso, Texas.
Brennan Cole is a fifteen-year old boy who likes to run to escape his thoughts.
Coyote Runs is an Apache boy who wants to be a man and is told he will be going on his first raid. Coyote Runs goes on the raid and is successful until he gets shot in the leg. He tries to escape to the medicine place until he gets cornered and is shot in the head. Brennan finds Coyote Runs skull on a camping trip and mysteriously brings it home even though he knows he shouldn’t. He has dreams that is somehow connected to the skull and is curious of what happened to the skull and why this is happening to him. He

    When the man started his journey to come across to America, he was taken to an old, run down, dark house. When Hector arrived at the house another man (Miguel) was already there waiting to be hustled across the border. They would spend several days and nights together in the house not knowing what was to come next. They had to go with limited food and drink for days. Then one night the coyote came and took the two men to a warehouse, there at the warehouse were many men.     The Coyotes are people who help facilitate illegal immigrants cross the US border. Experts speculate that illegal immigrants hired Coyotes to increase their probability to get into the United States. In The Devil’s Highway, the main coyote that is responsible for guiding Wellton 26 is Mendez. Mendez’s job consists of taking the illegal immigrants from the Mexican border town, Sonoita, to jump off point on a highway mile marker in Ajo. He instructed the men that it was a two day journey, and they should bring enough water to endure the journey. During the trip, Mendez veered off course because he was avoiding the Border Patrol and went the opposite way. Many of the men, who anticipated a two day journey, became severely dehydrated and aimlessly walking around. According to the testimonies from the survivors of Wellton 26, they were later abandoned by Mendez so he can buy water with their money. However, experts such as sign cutters believe that this is a common tactic amongst Coyotes to steal their money and abandon them. In the event when illegal aliens testify against them, they will have a plausible explanation for getting their money for the Coyote can buy their group water (201).
