On May 10th, the speaker, Aqua Nibii Waawaaskone, an indigenous singer, songwriter, storyteller, artist and activist, illuminated the aspects of the Indigenous community in the city of Toronto. She discussed the shortcomings that the Indigenous community had experienced throughout the history and development of Canada, specifically Toronto. Toronto has a long and intricate Indigenous history, in which most Torontonians are not cognisant of. Aqua referred to Toronto as Tkaronto, which was quite fascinating. When Aqua discussed the topic of residential schools, I did not react as much as I was exposed to this topic in other courses.…
It was the day that the Trans-Canada Highway was opened . This was the longest highway in the world, and it crossed six different time zones . The opening was a huge event, Prime Minister John Diefenbaker was there, God Saves the Queen played proudly and it was a huge party. At the event Diefenbaker stated that the highway, “ Represented the triumph of national determination over provincial parochialism and unruly geography .” Canadian’s believed that it was truly amazing that the years of struggle had come to an end, but at the same time they knew that Canada was forced to open the highway before it was actually finished.…
Hope Solo My Story By Hope Solo, was written to entertain the reader. The main purpose of this book was to get Hope’s story out there so she sounds like a mean person with no feelings. Hope Said some things that were rude about one of her teammates because she wasn't started in an important game. Hope had a meltdown and he could be one of the reasons she wrote this book. Hope was upset and embarrassed the whole entire team. Her teammates hated her and the girl who she thought she was close to back stabbed her. Hope took a break and hoped things would get better. The latter did after the head coach was fired and replaced with Pia. Pia was an upbeat coach she sung to us during practice and was always happy.…
Entry-Point Journal As I read the first few chapters of the novel, Indian Horse, I think I have gained a slightly different perspective of the world. For example, at first, I thought that Indigenous people were just individuals that had a strong relationship with Canada's land. Now I have learned why they have such a relationship with this land that they consider theirs. These individuals helped shape Canada physically and culturally. In World War II, they voluntarily joined the Canadian military to help protect the land that we now know as Canada.…
Born in 1948 in Fort Rae, Northwest Territories, Georges Erasmus grew up to be a major political figure and hero of the aboriginal peoples in his career. As a political activist and member of the Assembly of First Nations Erasmus carried forth a legacy of being a “Native rights Crusader” (CBC, 2014); but what does it mean to be a native rights crusader? Georges Erasmus made a lifelong contribution to the welfare of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada. As the president of the Dene nation, Erasmus pushed for self-government of the First Nations Peoples in Canada. During this time, Georges Erasmus rose through the political structure of the Assembly of First Nations.…
In today’s modern Canadian society every group is fighting for their rights to be heard, acknowledged and more importantly respected. In Canadian history one group has had to fight harder than anyone else to receive a voice to be heard and that is the Aboriginals. The question that needs to be asked is, do they really have a voice at all? Throughout this paper I will highlight three areas of aboriginal political uprising, First the history, secondly successful initiatives for the betterment of aboriginals and finally unsuccessful actions in the political landscape.…

In the novel “Travels with Charley”, by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck travels to many different regions in the United States. He is traveling across the U.S, to see if his opinions and what he is writing about are still true. He is a writer and since he was writing about The U.S from past experiences, he travels to see how much has changed or if its still the same and if the people still have the same kind of personalities. Along the way he meets many different people with different personalities. He also finds that many of the people he meets seem very impacted by his surroundings. So he supports that people can be impacted by their surroundings.…
Canada is using terms such as multiculturalism and diversity to boast about its acceptance and compassion for others while ignoring the needs of Indigenous peoples. By placing the attention on these terms Canada is strategically able to avoid its commitments to Indigenous peoples without widespread public scrutiny. The Canadian Broadcast Corporation’s (CBC) main, online website generally showcases headlines from around the world. Major clickable tabs for the page include things such as Music, life, arts, Canada 2017, local and ‘more’. It is in the ‘more’ tab that Canadians can access Indigenous news, which is rarely covered on the local pages or the front page of the site. Instead, CBC news focuses its attention on musicals, whether children…
Lastly, one of the strongest attributes that one can associate with Indigenous peoples is their resilience. Resilience is defined as the ability to return to normal. They have been mistreated time and time again, however they continue to fight for themselves and the rights they deserve. In these two relating challenges, resilience is clearly illustrated. Firstly, with the foster care issue, we see the Misipawistik Cree Nation being resilient by approaching abusive households and situations in different ways (“Manitoba’s First Nation’s Solution to Foster Care Crisis: Remove Parents, Not Kids,” 2015).…
This class has opened up my eyes to the various different perspectives and issues affecting Indigenous people. This class has challenged my views of the government policies; it has made me think critically of what has happened and what is being done to ensure no further damage occurs. Furthermore, this course has given me insight into what it means by anti-oppressive living. Accordingly Green & Thomas (2009) insists, “in order to strive for social justice, we must begin this process by asking ourselves how we know what we know” (p. 36). In spite of the unquestionable achievements by Canada in cultural pluralism and anti-discriminatory practices, racism remains a notable issue.…
Politics consists of three distinctive categories such as, the Conservative Party, the Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party. The Liberal Party generally stands between the view points of both the Conservative Party and the New Democratic Party. This party has formed the Government of Ontario since the year 2003. The Liberal Party is extremely open to embracing changes and creating opportunities for individuals in our modern world. As in individual, I tend to follow a middle path in which I consider both sides of the decisions I make. I am also quite open to learning newer concepts and I have the ability to adapt to any changes that my arise. Thus I believe that my Political Identity lies with the Liberal Party as my actions can relate to the ones made by this party.…
