Amy Barth’s purpose in writing “Rise of the Zombees” is to inform that zombees are a problem. Bees are being injected by flies and are eaten from the inside out. It’s slowly killing tons of bees. It causes the bees to practice unnatural behavior, such as leaving their homes at night, and being attracted to light. This has been spotted all over the nation and it could be growing.…
Fruitless Fall tells story of the disappearance of the honey bees due to global agriculture replaces small local agriculture, which leads to many culprits such as virus infections, pesticide, the mixing of multiple chemicals, monoculture crops and antibiotic usage. It is the collapse of the whole system, and honey bees collapse is probably one of the first that we have noticed since the buzzing bees are disappearing. Bees are sick and disappear in China, so they use pesticides and antibiotics on the remaining bees, but that makes problem worse. The Chinese provides cheap honey full with illegal antibiotics such as the chloramphenicol, which is a drug banned in the United States, Canada, and other European countries. China uncertainly, not the only culprits in causing colony collapse disorder (CCD), United States and the rest of the world also have parts in contributing to CCD. The conditions beekeepers provide for the bee workers are stressful, Jacobsen describes the description of how the honey bees have to go through when working in different environment each time they are transferred from coast to coast. Humans, unlike the past, feed their bees with corn syrup, make them travel long distance all around the country to fertilize crops, provide only one kind of flower for them to work with. The commercial beekeepers would apply…
Stories have an extremely important effect on the lives and the characters in the novel entitled, The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kid. This book is about a young 14 year old girl named Lily Owens. She has to go through life knowing that she killed her mother and that her father loathes her. She runs away form home and breaks her friend Rosaleen out of the hospital. They finally find a home, based on the clues that Lily’s mother left behind, and moves in with a family that accepts her for who she is rather than what she has to do, she can express her individuality. She gets a different look at the world and can see how stories, discrimination and family dynamics are important and valued differently. The stories in this book have three major functions in setting the stage for a good novel. They are: stories can be interpreted in many ways, stories can help people escape reality, and stories can have a lasting impact.…
Lily Owens, who is the main character of The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd, is a courageous girl who overcomes many challenges throughout the novel. For one thing, when she is curious, she is determined to do anything. Another example is she is not afraid to twist up the truth for her needs. Lastly, Lily performs heroic acts throughout the story. Throughout the novel, Lily Owens demonstrates the meaning of courage.…
"New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locating her circle of attendants." (57) This quote is at the beginning of chapter three and not only foreshadows many things to come, but within the quote, two of the novel’s main metaphors are mentioned, bees and the queen, which is referring to society and a mother figure. Although this quote is largely interpreted as a metaphor for Lily looking for a new queen or mother figure, and perhaps August being that mother, I believe that it has another meaning as well. I believe that the Black Madonna also serves as a “queen” and mother figure to all the women in “The Secret Life of Bees.”…
Each year since 2006, bees have gradually been disappearing from their hives or dying off. Bees have died off before in the past. This is called colony collapse disorder or CCD. In the past CCD was cause by mites or infections, but now this is caused because of the commercial agricultural farmers. Bees play a key part in pollination. When the crops are pollinated by the bees, they are capable of producing the fruits or vegetables the human population eats. Farmers primarily depend upon the bees to pollinate their crops. The honeybees were the most adaptable bees out there because they would pollinate almost any of the plants. Other bees were only attracted to specific plants or flowers.…
Save the Bees! For many people, seeing any insect with a stinger invokes foul memories of being tormented by a menacing bee, wasp, or hornet. Many victims might recall a moment of sudden panic while sitting on the edge of the pool on a warm summer day; they suddenly hear an incessant buzzing noise and look down to see a tiny yellow and black bumblebee flying dangerously close to their skin. There is no time to discern the intent of this bee, be it malevolent or benign. Immediately, the primeval “fight or flight” instinct triggers and many people will either swat at the bee or flee the scene.…

If the honey bee does become extinct soon, then there would be nothing to take it’s place. This means that flowers wouldn’t be pollinated. Then, no more fruits, vegetables, nuts, honey, or coffee. It is important for flowers to be pollinated because “One of every three bites of food eaten worldwide depends on pollinators” - Elizabeth Grossman of Lancaster Online. If nothing is done for the honey bees, it could lead to a much bigger problem such as food scarcity, and would be much harder for people to receive necessary…
There is, however, research being done on why the bee population is declining so rapidly - the main answer found being Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), in which a colony is near-completely vacated, and the bees that had apparently abandoned it seeming to disappear - no…
Some committees are already trying to make a difference. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) presented an article where they mentioned that the Steering Committee had developed the Colony Collapse Disorder Action Plan. (1) EPA is currently helping advance research investigating pesticide effects on pollinators (3). Bees are important and their life is crucial to the well-being of others so we must save…
The problem has also hit bee colonies in Europe, where regulators are considering a ban on a type of pesticides known as neonicotinoids that some environmental groups blame for the bee collapse. The U.S. report cites pesticides, but near the bottom of the list of factors. And federal officials and researchers advising them said the science doesn't justify a ban of the pesticides yet.…
