In the first chapter the authors begin by laying out their thesis: place matters (Dreier, Mollenkopf, & Swanstrom 1). The authors look at three different Congressional districts to show how place is different in metropolitan American. Those places include "poor central-city in the South Bronx of New York", "a district that spans the West Side of Cleveland and its suburbs", and "a wealthy outer-ring suburban district west of Chicago" (Dreier, Mollenkopf, & Swanstrom 3).…

The list is as follows: political socialization; power, authority, legitimacy, and capacity; public opinion; media; political elites; political parties; elections; campaigns; presidential powers; among others. Each of these themes is presented and further elaborated with specific examples within the book. The themes complement the information presented in class by adding more specificity and depth. For example, in class, we briefly discussed power, authority, legitimacy, and capacity. In much the same way, the book showed how the lines between these concepts are often blurred and misunderstood, leading to dissensions and hostilities between the public and the elite. However, the book often offered more nuanced theories and explanations for the development of these overarching motifs, through the use of detailed examples and…
In the politically motivated masterpiece Constructing the Political Spectacle, political scientist Murray Edelman argues that, politicians play with ambiguous language and false constructs to manipulate public ideology on current events. The author illustrates that by doing so, politicians can sway public opinion on matters that align with the goals of politicians. This analysis illustrates how President Trump utilized the elements of Edelman’s political spectacle in the 2018 State of the Union Address. This analysis identifies how President Trump constructs problems and enemies from within our country by illustrating how he plays on the opposing viewpoints of liberals and conservatives. By focusing on polarizing issues such as immigration,…

In Kevin Mattson’s historical look at Harlem’s struggle for a democratic urban space, he concludes that, “What Harlemites were discovering could be generalized for many Americans. The culture of consumption and social mobility displaced hopes in a civic consciousness…and a democratic public” (318). Modern society straddles the competing pressures between economic growth and a socially fair citizenship. The phenomenon of equality based on a democratic American identity is taken over by the unrelenting drive for material success that is ingrained into American culture. What happened in Harlem rings true of the consumerist American Dream left unchecked. Without any accountability for the disconnect between the ideal and reality, people are left to grieve as their dreams are rendered false in light of the…
I found out that there is a lot more to the political side of suburban communities. For example, in the documentary they talked about Long Island, New York suburban areas and how depending on the governor that is elected into office. That will determine on whether or not the money for development and sustainment will go to Manhattan Island for the city or to Long Island for the suburban areas. I thought before watching the documentary it would be about problems within the community, for example two neighbors having a dispute about problems in their daily lives or problems with unwelcome pets trespassing on their property. As I watched the documentary I didn’t really have any questions in mind about the…

Detroit, once the New York City of its time, nick named the “Motor City” as it contained one of the leading car manufacturing centers of the automobile industry. As a metropolis for the first half of the twentieth century, Post World War II, Detroit became an economic fortress and focal point in American History. Detroit’s economic stronghold placed the city in a position that was once beneficial. From the surging employment opportunities perpetuated by the booming automotive market to the development, and implementation of substandard housing and the casual labor market, Detroit became the land of opportunity that loomed with an air of new beginnings. Today, however, Detroit continues to reap the aftermath of contradictory political and economic delegation of the post WWII era. As America continues to relish in the economic rewards of this era the inverse effects of inadequate political decision making continues to resonate amongst the urban streets of Detroit today.…

What drives gentrification? (2014). This article is based on a speech at a recent ISO forum in Brooklyn, New York addressing the roots of gentrification and it responded on how residents of big cities everywhere face the effects of gentrification, as long-time residents are pushed out of neighborhoods due to rising rents and housing costs and other changes. The author provided an objective analysis from the perspective of the working class of New York and of all other cities undergoing gentrification by examining what appears to be two contradictory outcomes of gentrification: the "improvement" of a neighborhood on the one hand and the displacement of its long-time residents on the other. Flores also analyzed the misconception between geographers David Levy whose theory explains gentrification as flowing from the consumer preferences of a new, youthful, white-collar middle class that wishes to change from a suburban to an urban lifestyle and Late Neil Smith counterposes Levy 's theory with a class perspective by contrasting the owners of capital intent on gentrifying and developing a neighborhood having a lot more "consumer’s choice" about which neighborhoods they want to devour, and the kind of housing and other facilities they produce for the rest of us to…
