Bacon’s “Of Studies” is not written like the typical essay you find today. We are taught that an essay must have an introduction paragraph, body paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph, but Of Studies has only one. Instead we find a variety of statements about how studies can be used. The first thing he argues is that “Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.”, and then gives an explanation for each one. There is also quite a bit of parallelism in the essay that can be seen when he list facts about how studies are used. The sentence “Crafty men contemn studies, simple men admire them, and wise men use them” is just one instance where you can see the repetitive parallelism. The diction used in Of …show more content…
We see multiple chapters to describe different parts of her story. She gives us information about weasels and their natural tendencies before she talks about how she became interested in the lifestyle of weasels. She describes her weasel encounter that happened one day in the wood and the meanings she was able to pull out of it. The last thing we see in Dillard’s essay is how she relates the weasel’s life to how humans live. She focuses those last three “chapters” on how the weasel “lives in necessity and we live in choice”, this way she can emphasize the significance of the simple lifestyle. We see Thurber struggling in his classes like botany and gym because of his horrible eyesight. In botany he could never see the flower cells under a microscope and never received any help other than the professor adjusting the lens, but when he says “It takes away from the beauty of flowers anyway” we see Thurber trying to put a positive spin on it. In his gym class we also see how little help Thurber got because the only reason he passed gym was with the help of another boy who took his swim test for him.
