The Search for Authentic Human Experiences in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by, Phillip K. Dick In the twenty-first century, many of us have become accustomed to the ubiquitous presence of technology. The fusion between us and technology blurs the line between the real and tangible world with the simulated realm that resides in the pockets of most of the population. The danger that lies in the transfer between real and technological worlds is the ignition of an erasure of human identity caused by the rise of superficiality in these mediums. Superficial desires amplify and override natural needs to create hyperreal needs which remodels our view of the world into an image of these desires. How do we know that we are experiencing a genuine moment in life, and not one that was fabricated by technology and the media? This topic is explored in Phillip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, where Rick Deckard, an android bounty hunter, finds himself conflicted in the intricacies regarding what constitutes as real and artificial. Although the story assumes an opposition against technology, one reviewer suggests that “technology can be used as a means to reclaim the essence of humanity” (Sims 67).
