The painting ‘The Temptation of Christ’ by Ivan Kramskoi depicts the image of Christ as a true human being. The artist who was also one of the founders of the Society for Traveling Art exhibitions, in this portrait of Jesus Christ attempts to show the world a different side of Jesus. In this portrait he does not tell the story of ‘Jesus the son of God’ but of a man going through a difficult time of testing both physically and spiritually.
The portrait also referred to as ‘Christ in the Wilderness’ was first exhibited in 1872 at the Peredvizhiniki exhibitions. In ‘The Temptation of Christ’ Kramskoi dares his audience to shed off the ‘spiritual lenses’ that they apply in understanding the history of Jesus in order to understand the depth of his suffering in the wilderness. By looking at Jesus from the angle he highlights the real suffering that Jesus went through as a human being. This is different from looking at the concept from the angle of Jesus being God and therefore having the divine strength to endure being in the wilderness and the temptations.
