Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield is a New York based that is involved with the delivery of finances, health care services and long –term insurance countrywide. Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield revealed that the company had learnt of an apparent breach against their system where hackers were able to gain illegally access to its customers' information on September 10, 2015. According to the company’s spokesperson, the information accessed included claims and financial payment information; names of clients; birth dates, SS numbers; addresses and telephone numbers (Privacy Rights Clearinghouse 2016). The company estimated that approximately 10 million customers had their private data potentially accessed by unauthorized third party.
