In the story “Fiesta” by Junot Diaz, Yunior is the protagonist. His actions and dialogue given by Diaz is what makes Yunior such a round character. A round character is a character that the writer provides so much information about that it is almost as if we know the character as a real person. Through Diaz’s description we learn so much about Yunior that it is almost as if he has come to life through the words written on the page, and he has become a real person. Yunior wants to have a normal family more than anything in the world it seems. However Diaz only gives an insight to why he is so unspoken with his thoughts, why he is so scared, and why he has so much hatred for his father. Yunior has tears in his eyes every time his father yells at him and it is “More out of reflex than pain… ” (Diaz 172), Yunior says. He is astounded to think he is the only one who ever makes his father mad. Diaz does not talk about the other children getting in trouble either. So Dias wants Yunior to be portrayed as the bad kid in the family for his own contributions to the story we are not aware of. Even though Yunior cannot help but to get sick every time he rides in the new van, his father still beats him. This is why he resents his father. It is not his fault, yet his dad still wants to beat him and yell at him. Yunior eats mints on the way to the party to help with the sickness. This shows that he gets sick when he is upset. His mother is so kind to him and comforts him. Diaz showing both sides to Yunior’s behavior is helpful to the reader to know why he is so paranoid sometimes of his own father, and why he loves his mother so much. Not only is Diaz making Yuniors character seem scared and quite shy, but he is obviously holding back a tremendous amount of anger for his father. The way his father treats him is obviously the biggest reason why Yunior makes remarks about how he thinks of his father. He calls his dad a “… dick.” (177) at one point in the story.
