William Faulkner’s “A Rose for Emily” is a short story based on the acts of Emily Grierson, before her death. Through the use of foreshadowing, Faulkner creates a veil of mystery that and draws the reader in, keeping them guessing until the very end. The first instance in which Faulkner utilizes foreshadowing is when he writes, "Dammit, sir...will you accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad?" (Faulkner). While it may seem as though it is unnecessary information, the pointing out of the odor in Emily’s house is later concluded to be an effect of Homer’s death. Another example of foreshadowing is when Emily is going to the druggist and insists on purchasing the strongest poison they have to offer, "I want some poison...I want the best you…

Ms. Emily lived in a white, square, seventies style house that is now rundown, un maintained, rotting and decaying. The inside of the house was said to smell like "dust and disuse - a close, dank smell." Yet the scent smelt by 3 different neighbors was stronger than this, the stench was so rotten that it traveled into neighboring homes. As one neighbor complained and described the smell she said "... they were not surprised when the smell developed. It was another link between the gross, teeming world and the high and mighty Griersons." Faulkner was trying to develop a scent so strong that it could only be that of a dead body. As Ms. Emily's husband, Homer Barron had gone unseen ever since they were married, it foreshadows to the discovery of his dead body in the house. The foreshadowing helps to bring certainty and believability to the ending of this story.…

A writer's choice of words can be the fall or the rise of the author's work. Using diction, writers are able to make words come alive and illustrate a particular scene that the author wants to portray. If diction is not used, the idea trying to be portrayed can become blasé. Readers are more captivated to read works if the story is more descriptive and influential. For example, compare the two following sentences: the old brown tree is dying, and the aged russet tree slowly decays into the earth. Of the two sentences, the second sentences uses diction that is able to let the reader's imagination run wild. William Faulkner is unique writer who is able to manipulate a mere sentence into an image that captivates the reader's minds. In "A Rose for Emily," Faulkner uses diction to enhance his mysterious happenings of Emily Grierson's life from the way the townspeople behave all the way to Emily's unrequited love for Homer Barron.…

The first hint of foreshadowing for me was when Miss Emily took up with Homer Barron and the townsfolk kept referring to her as “poor Emily”(85). Emily already seems to be on edge, bitter, and annoyed with the townsfolk, calling her “poor Emily” is not going to end well. She seems the type to…

One could interpret the death scene of Miss Emily as symbolic. “And so she died. Fell ill in the house filled with dust and shadows…” (Kelly, 163). Dust is a pile of dirt that keeps growing, if not taken care of; which is symbolic of the tragic life of Miss Emily. There is such a buildup of sorrow in her life, and she just keeps it hidden away inside her. The effect it had on her became so great that it drove her insane, literally. A shadow is something that lurks behind someone and never leaves them; which is symbolic of the shadow of the wrong Miss Emily committed, in murdering Homer Barron, lurking behind…

The narrator provides that Miss Emily is crazy in an obscure way. First the smell in which we can see in page 284, "will you accuse a lady to her face of smelling bad?" Second, when she wanted arsenic in page 286, "I want arsenic." Thirdly, how she never leaves her house in page 288. Lastly, she is crazy because when the townspeople went inside Miss Emily's house they found Homer lying in a bed decaying and found out that Miss Emily was sleeping next it in page 289, "Then we noticed that in the second pillow… leaning forward, that faint… long strand of iron-gray hair." We can infer that the narrators are just telling the story out of their observation from a first person plural point of view. The narrator is however very…

In William Faulkner “A Rose for Emily’’ we think about who is Emily, what does the rose symbolizes, and most of all who is the narrator. Throughout most of Faulkner’s story for me as a reader I wanted to figure that out. In the beginning Emily is presented as a woman who grew up wealthy never having to worry about anything. But over time things changed after her father’s death. Later on, Emily never really takes notice of the present.…
