Summary Of Hatchet By Gary Paulsen

Hatchet is a book about a thirteen year old boy named Brian Robeson. The author of the story is Gary Paulsen. Brian’s parents have recently divorced, and he is spending the summer with his dad in Canada. Before Brian gets on the bush plane, his mother gives him a hatchet. A few hours into the flight, the pilot has a heart attack and dies. Brian is able to fly the plane for a while, but the plane crashes into a lake. Luckily, he survives. When Brian recovers from the crash, he hops out of the plane and checks his surroundings. He finds a place to build a shelter and collects some berries to eat. During his first night in the wild, a porcupine attacks him when he is sleeping. Brian then figures out how to start a fire. The porcupine attacks with his quills, the skunk sprays him, which causes blindness for a few hours, and a moose attacks him which injures his ribs and bruises his body. There are times of rain, and the temperature starts getting colder. The tornado destroys his shelter, leaving him with no safe place to go. During his time in the wild, Brian has barely any clean food or water. With all these things combined it was very tough for Brian to survive. I thought the book was really good. I found that the book moved at a fast pace. None of the parts were too long or too boring. I liked how the author made it interesting by giving Brian many problems he had to face. The part where he gets rescued by the fur buyer was very cool to read. If I were placed in his situation, I probably would not survive. Even though Brian faced many difficulties and got discouraged, he never gave up. He was determined to survive no matter what crossed his path. I need to be just as determined to find solutions to problems I face and think rationally about
