In Peter Ripley’s essay “The Autobiographical Writings of Frederick Douglass,” he states that, “The Narrative signaled Douglass’ emergence as a committed abolitionist and suggests his developing intellectual skills during those early years of freedom” (135). Ripley describes throughout his essay how Douglass started as a slave, fought for his freedom, became an average lecturer, and in the end became, “Ambitious and intellectually curious… reading reform literature, participating in discussions and absorbing the lectures of his associates” (136). Ripley describes Douglass’ early lectures as unintellectual because of how long he had been a slave, using “plantation dialect” (136). Early on, Douglass got the image that he wasn’t an actual slave. So, he started to write about his slave experiences, giving names and dates to all the things that had happened to him to give himself authentication and to knock out some of the rumors about him and his past. One of Douglass’ biggest critics was a man by the name of A.C.C. Thompson, who wrote that he had known “the recent slave by the name of Frederick Bailey” (138) trying to disprove all of Douglass’ firsthand accounts. Douglass responds to the statements by describing his time as a slave and explaining that without those experiences there was no way that he would’ve been able to write The Narrative in the Life. Ripley then goes on to explain how writing The Narrative was a major sign of Douglass’ growth and maturity. The most explicit theme of the reading that stood out to me was racism in the form of slavery in the southern United States. Throughout the narrative, Douglass included excellent examples of how slaves are dehumanized, mentally and physically, by the slave system. In many ways, slavery and segregation were the main obstacles in his personality growth. The Narrative of Frederick Douglass is a memoir of a former slave who is known now as an abolitionist. This autobiography takes place in Eastern Shore of Maryland; Baltimore; New York City; New Bedford, Massachusetts. Douglass serves his life on a plantation where life is not thought to be that difficult. Being a child, he serves in the household instead of in the fields. Shelley chose to allow Frankenstein to narrate his own tale for several reasons. For example, a direct effect of this first person narrative is that it lets the reader into the inner thoughts of the main protagonist. This allows us to pass judgement on the choices he makes, the explanations he gives for them and the general way in which he considers his actions and comes to justify them. However, in fitting with the gothic genre of the novel, the decision on whether or not to sympathise with Frankenstein can not be made easily, putting the reader into an uncomfortable, uncertain state of mind. The clever narrative Shelley uses often creates such a feeling of ambiguity, which enhances the horror we come to feel as the book progresses. Whilst the fact that Shelley presents Frankenstein's view first suggests she doesn't want us to totally condemn him, there is also an ironic repulsion we sometimes feel towards him because of the views that he expresses so confidently, despite his attempts to gain sympathy. In this respect, Frankenstein's narration is often more telling of himself than he actually realises.…
