Lily is a fourteen-year-old girl whose mother died when she was four years old, an accident that Lily feels she was responsible for. She dresses in clothes she made in home economics. She is not a popular person in school. She has jet-black hair that resembles a nest of cowlicks, no chin, Sophia Loren eyes and an inferiority complex. She takes to picking scabs on her body and biting the flesh around her fingernails until they bleed. Boys, even the hard-up ones, ignore her. Rosaleen makes Lily wear breeches in the cold, which are neither fashionable nor complimentary, especially under her dresses. Girls become quiet when she walks past, because she has no fashion…

In the novel, Ethan Frome, there are two women that are apart of Ethan Frome’s pitiable existence, Zeena and Mattie. There are both acutely different from each other but they also share some similarities between themselves. Zeena and Mattie are different in many ways in the matter of appearance, their outlook on life, and their interest in Ethan Frome but eventually it shows towards the end of the novel that Mattie is not so much distinct from these qualities after “the smash up”.…

Wharton suggests that Mattie's cheerful attitude, her spirited activity, and her ability to inspire confidence in Ethan, prompts him to believe that Mattie could bring him bliss. One of the reasons why Ethan thinks that Mattie could turn his life around was because she usually overflowed with cheerfulness and energy. Ethan is often fascinated by "her gaiety [, which to him,] was a plain proof of indifference." Her cheerful image contrasts sharply with that of Zeena who is selfish and melancholy, and brings some cheer into his otherwise dull life. Mattie again exhibits her ability to spread warmth while she learns her household duties. When Ethan sees her performing her household duties awkwardly, he bursts out laughing, and, to his surprise, Mattie also "burst[s] out laughing and this made them better friends." This incident baffles Ethan who assumed that a woman would blush with embarrassment instead of laughing it away and charms him so that the idea comes to be implanted into him that Mattie would bring him a happy life. Mattie brings him further happiness by simply listening to him especially when he talks of subjects completely new to her.…

Analysis: In the short story of “A&P” by John Updike, he used the event of the girl’s coming into Sammy’s store to portray that people aren’t always as they seem. Sammy thought that by standing up for these girls, he would become a hero and they would recognize him for what he had done. Until the moment he walked outside, “I look around for my girls, but they…

Lily in appearance is a young teen who is fourteen years old, with ‘un-cool’ clothes and wild hair. Her clothes are un-cool because she makes them herself and T. Ray doesn’t want to waste money on things like clothes for young girls. Lily believes her eyes are nice like ‘Sophia Loren’s’ and that she doesn’t have much of a chin. Her description of her hair was that ‘it was constantly going off in eleven wrong directions’ and that her ‘black hair is a nest of cowlicks’. She is disappointed with how she looks and thinks that she has a hard time ‘being a girl’.…

In the story, A & P the theme highlights adolescence in which the author resonates young woman and men who are coming of age. First, the innocence of three carefree girls unashamed of wearing their bathing suits in a non-beach setting attracts the attention of Sammy, a nineteen year old male who works at the A & P grocery store. Second, the author describes the girls through Sammy as the protagonist who admires their bodies and using vivid imagery to describe their physical appearance of these young girls from a male’s point of view. Sammy describes each of the girls in detail, admiring their bodies and finds one of the three girls most attractive calling her Queenie. To contrast the beauty of these girls, Sammy describes the older women…

Many of the modern television shows and movies use similar themes and subject matter as “A&P.” Things like young girls trying to appear older than they are, an awkward young man coming to terms with his sexuality, and the idea of conventional masculinity are all commonly found in the media. The question of how an adolescent girl’s mind works is that one that cannot be easily answered, but attempts are often made. The character of Sammy is virtually clueless about females, and Updike makes this obvious, “You never know for sure how girl’ minds work (do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?).” When this story was written the dynamic between young men and women was not as readily explored, but today it is a source of entertainment. High school dramas have taken over prime time television. However, this story is not one of drama, but rather ironic humor. The reader anticipates Sammy to act like a typical teenage boy, and mirror the actions of his coworker. Instead, he connects to them on a more emotional level, which leads him to act irrationally. Updike turns what could have been another typical teenage story into a satire of society’s expectations on sexuality and gender.…

Vic and Enn are very close friends. They both attended an all boys’ school in south London. Vic is very independent and outgoing, where Enn is shy and slow to warm up to when it comes to girls. Vic is the typical “jock” he has the handsome smile and a charming way with girls. Enn is awkward, and has trouble swooping girls off their feet. Enn acts as a “wing man” for Vic, as they attend a party. Vic ends up getting with a girl, while Enn converses with a girl on the couch.. Like usual. Vic makes talking to girls sound easy when he says “They’re just girls; they don’t come from another planet.” Enn is the oldest of 3, his two siblings being sisters. Vic is the youngest of 5, boys. Perhaps this is where he gained the knowledge to talk to girls. Enn said “back when I wished on falling stars, a brother is what I wished for.” I think this also plays a role in the way Enn looks up to Vic, almost like an older brother.…

Plastic surgery originated in ancient India. It is well documented in Sushruta Samhita (June 2006) by Kaviraj Kunjalal Bhishagratna, “that several types of surgery were performed in the Vedic period about 3500 B.C.
