In the scene where Zeena goes to the doctor’s, for starters, is a miscommunication between the couple from how she believes her husband’s lack of interest is just laziness. By way of example, Ethan tells his wife that “‘Jotham’ll drive [her] over,’” to the town, but “he knew that Zeena must be wondering why he did not offer to drive her” (33). In Zeena’s mind she perceived this as him just being lazy for not taking her to the…

    9. In this quote, Ethan now sees Zeena in a completely different light. The description of Zeena represents a major contrast between her and Mattie. This depiction is very negative and describes Zeena as old and dry. Her stature is dark and unfeminine as the quote uses the words ‘tall and angular’ and ‘flat breast’ which are associated with a more masculine body. In the story, this is the opposite of how Mattie is described. On the other hand, Mattie is youthful, sweet, and pretty. Now the readers can see that this contrast is most likely the cause for Ethan’s indiscretions.…

Ethan’s life in a rural environment, suppressed the opportunity for him to become someone. (quote about Ethan not going to college). Ethan stays in Starkfield to aid his ill parents alongside his distant cousin Zenobia, “she’s always been the greatest hand at doctoring in the country” (Wharton 13). As a result of the crippling winter Ethan asks Zeena to stay with him after his mother’s passing and “in turn could do no less than marry her” (63). This was Ethan’s first mistake. Ethan had the chance handed to him to go and put himself through college and sell the farm; sadly Ethan’s sense of obligations prevailed. (Quote…

Ethan’s First attempt of escape involves his sickly mother. Before Ethan met his wife, Zeena, he felt trapped by his mother and by Starkfield’s emptiness. Ethan had hoped to become an engineer, but despite attending school, his dreams were never fulfilled, because of his mother who had grown sick after his father’s death, and Ethan was left to care for both his mother and his family’s farm. Ethan’s obligation to care for his mother materializes into a hefty, oppressive burden until, Zeena, his cousin, rescues him and substantially lifts his burden off his shoulders. Zeena’s appearance in Ethan’s life saves him, for as she appeares “human speech was heard again in the house” (Wharton, 35). Zeena’s appearance brings life into Ethan’s lonely world. When Ethan’s father died, his mother grew increasingly silent, and rarely spoke. Because of this, he lacked human reaction, and in turn, grew lonely as well. As his mother became more silent, Ethan’s world became emptier and colder. But because of Zeena, Ethan is saved from the cold, lonely silence which imprisons him; Zeena brings warmth into his life once again. The narrator tells his audience, “Zeena’s volubility was music in [Ethan’s] Ears. He felt he might have ‘gone like his mother’ if the sound of a new life had not come to steady him” (Wharton, 35). Had…

For all of his life, he had lived in the sight and sound of Mattie Silver, and he could no longer conceive of its being otherwise” (1.32). Zenobia had oppressed Ethan, which caused him to develop a disliking towards her, and to stop seeing her as a person. Ethan disfavors hurting people but instead he hurt Zeena anyway. Him expressing dishonesty and cheating on her with Mattie had downgraded his role as a man, husband, and as a person. Little mistakes and actions had then started to develop, spreading the problem to become even worse.…

Wharton depicts Zeena as old, cold, and insensitive while Mattie is warm, loving, kind, and most importantly, a much more fitting wife for Ethan. Symbolism is used in the form of Mattie’s red scarf to give Mattie a sense of life and loving warmth, while at the same time giving Zeena a colder appearance. Therefore, Wharton makes Ethan’s desire to leave his ghastly wife for another woman considerate in the eyes of the reader. Yet, just like in the case of his engineering career, Ethan cannot bear to leave Zeena, on the account that society would severely frown upon a husband that abandons his sickly wife. He is torn between following what he knows is the “right” thing to do, and following what he knows will make him happy. It is important to note that his love for Mattie never falters—The conflict is external, not internal. He is afraid of what people would think, and not whether or not he loves Mattie. Although he has one night alone with Mattie, he cannot stop thinking about all of the responsibilities placed on him. His strong desire for Mattie eventually leads to the shattering of his marriage, which is symbolized by the shattering of Zeena’s prized wedding red pickle…

His story of isolation takes place in the desolate town of Starkfield, a name which in itself depicts the harsh living conditions. Ethan and his overbearing wife, Zeena live on a poverty-stricken farm along with Mattie, Ethan’s romantic interest. Zeena is a hypochondriac who burdens Ethan and drives him closer to Mattie. What separates Ethan from Mattie isn't his forbidden love for her, but society's rules. The cycle of illnesses in Ethan's life, due to the disease of others, eventually results in his own complex state of exigency. “Ethan is even described as living in a depth of moral isolation too remote for casual access"(Wharton 9).The ominous and vindictive monsters of society, disease, and the environment are what ultimately condemn Ethan Frome to a life of…

Ethan has married into a life where he has to face Zeena as a responsibility, not a wife. The only reason they are still together is because of Ethan’s sense of duty and how he can’t live with the guilt of cheating on his wife. The love that is supposed to be in this relationship is not there, it was never there. This emptiness just sucks all of the will out of Ethan to live.…

Although Zeena is Ethan's wife, Ethan is repelled by Zeena's constant illnesses and what is portrayed as a miserable marriage. The author used extensive characterization to describe Zeena as a gruesome, aging, flat-chested, angry, and fun-sucking person. This characterization is what turned the reader away from Zeena and edged them towards Ethan's side. Ethan often contemplated moving away to live and pursue a relationship with Mattie, but his conscience destroyed that dream. Even though Zeena was old and grotesque, she was still Ethan's wife, and it would have been morally wrong for Ethan to divorce Zeena to marry a younger and prettier, Mattie Silver. Ethan knew this and he understood it well. Sometimes when he thought of Mattie his conscience would leave him, but it would always come back before he made a…
