I am not trying to say that they are equal either, but in their own sense, both types of crime are harmful in their own respect. Greed can lead people to become deviant. For example,
“Capitalism is based on private control of wealth, people, who threaten the property of others–especially the poor who steal from the rich—are prime candidates for being labeled deviant. On the other hand, the rich who take advantage of the poor are less likely to be labeled deviant.” (185)
This quote I find it highly unfair and that since the rich can take advantage of the “poor” their motive for money (greed) can increase. On the other hand, hate crimes are as dangerous as greed crimes because attacking someone because of their skin color, religion, race, gender, etc. is plain deviant. It is racially bias. And as the book states, “A belief is no longer protected when it becomes the motive for a crime” (188).
