Summary: One day, Karana and Ramo spot red sails while they are out gathering roots. The red sails belong to the Aleuts Native Americans from Alaska Captain Orlov. They have come to Ghalas to hunt otter. When it is time for the Aleuts to leave, they only gave one trunk of spearheads and jewelry because had
a very successful hunt. Chief Chowig asks for three more trunks, but they lead to a fight. The Aleuts win because they have a cannon, which they use to kill many of the warriors. More than half of the tribe’s members die in the battle, and Chief Chowing. Everyone has to do more work to do in order to survive, and the new chief Kimki, soon they sails to the Island and finding a place for the tribe to relocate. On the ship, no one noticed that Ramo has run off to get his spear. Karana dives into the water to go with Ramo together. But only a few days when stay on the island, the wild dogs kill Ramo when he sneaks off alone to the place where the canoes are tied up.
Main event: Karana’s father got killed by the white men in the battle. Another one is when they sailed off to another Island but they left Ramo behind and Karana goes with him a couple of days later Ramo was killed by wild dogs. In the middle of the book she learns how to hunt and take of herself on the island, she tries to kill the pack of dogs that killed Ramo and then some white men came, but she hides. At the end, another Russian ship comes to hunt. When they finish hunting, they take her to the ship so she can go to the mainland. She brings her favorite clothes and jewelry with her, as well as two songbirds and Rontu. But after 7 weeks her past away. Rating: I think the Island of the Blue Dolphins deserves a high rating. If I would rate this book I would give it a four star because of the great description of actions and give good figurative language which make it a very descriptive book. The reason I gave it a four star is that at the end I didn’t really like how Karana and Rontu died which make you rewrite the ending to a happier ending where they lived happy ever after but instead after 7 weeks Karana dies. I would recommend because it gives great examples of figurative language and descriptive writing.
