The story is about a single mother moving to a new house and her six year old daughter wanting to stay in the house that she loves. The dynamic illustrations, with cartoon, water-colored, styled characters, fill the pages with details about the family and their community. Jamela’s single mother, Mama, just acquired a new job and now the family is moving to a new home in the suburbs. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. Each child has a problem and learns how to deal with it differently. Junie B. Jones needs glasses. No matter what she says or does, at the end of the day she still needs to be able to see clearly. Embarrassed and disgusted, Junie B. Jones is afraid that she’ll lose her new friends. She thinks they’ll make fun of her. Junie B. Jones tried hard to impress her new friends by making them laugh several times. She strongly believes that they will turn away because only “nerds” wear glasses. The type of structure that occurs throughout the story is epiphany. Junie B gets an insight into reality. She realizes that not everyone is as mean as she thought. Junie B. Jones made her problem bigger than what it really was. The type of conflict encounters with person versus environment. She had a problem and was not sure how to deal with her classmate’s reactions. Her friends ended up surprising her when they thought she was cool with her new glasses. “Your eyes are amazing Junie B. Jones, I can’t see anything so your eyes must be special” (66). Junie B. Jones felt good inside. She learned not to make assumptions about other people. Theodore Jones had been asked to solve a mystery for one of his friends. It is his job to find a missing hamster. He gathers clues, facts and information from everyone in order to solve the problem. Some things were not making any sense. It seemed impossible to find the hamster. Instead of giving up Theodore tried even harder to get a conclusion. He wanted to make his friend happy. He also wanted to have another successful mystery solved. The structure of the plot was rising in action. Each clue led to one thing to another. The type of conflict associated with the story is person versus self. Theodore kept contradicting himself. He was trying to understand why he could not figure out the mystery. Everything suddenly made perfect sense. Soon enough the hamster was found alive and healthy. A surprise came along with it as well.…
The text information in Peter Cowan's short story School, has been constructed in a way that we as the reader can interpret it in countless more ways than what it may mean on a surface level. Cowan limits the information of the text to allow the reader to form their own meaning. The text does not provide complete information about the boy in the story; it merely implies that he is feeling alienated and depressed. There is no text information that unambiguously explains that the boy is feeling alienated and excluded. In the last paragraph, the boy's difficulty is described by, 'He looked at the symbols on the paper and they blurred and made no pattern.' In this sentence, we assume that he does not understand the work, but this is only inferred. This text can be analysed as being limited in text information; to interpret it, the reader has to make assumptions of the omitted information.…
I notice a lot while reading this book. The title of each of these chapters is related closely to the content within it. These chapters break down Melinda’s days in classes, at school, and at home. After reading the whole book, Eva is upset with Anne Frank’s story, because Anne died. Eva linked Anne’s story with her own life, and she thinks it is not right for Anne to die. Many different characteristics define leadership. Integrity, the second letter in our acronym F.I.B.E.R, is one of many. Integrity can mean many things, but for the most part it means to be honest and to have moral standards. Similar to integrity, leadership can sometimes be difficult to define and can have various meanings depending on a person’s views, values, and beliefs. To me leadership, or being a good leader, means to set an example, direction, to motivate, and to maximize individual efforts to achieve one main goal. Freshman year is never an easy year, especially when you're the new girl. Aliyah wanted to incinerate her past and have a fresh start; she would be a stranger to all of them. Once she arrived to her new locker, she had a difficult time accessing it. After the twentieth time, she was finally able to open her locker and put all her supplies inside. On her way to her first class, she had overheard that the math teacher assigned arduous assignments causing an abundance of students to drop out within the first week. Mrs.Katra, the math teacher, gave a "I've been doing this for 35 years, I know all the tricks" speech for 30 minutes and gave us a homework assignment afterwards; at first glance it didn't seem difficult but after looking at it for a while, Aliyah began to feel uneasy about the class. After one of Erin’s students is witness to a racially motivated gang shooting and after finding a stereotypical racial drawing being passed around in her class of one of her students, Erin’s idealistic outlook starts to come down and she has the students write down journal entries every day to better understand the daily struggles these teens face and to help connect with them. She brings in music and literature that she believes they can relate to like The Diary of Anne Frank to show them the outcome of intolerance throughout the world. After hearing each other’s stories they realize they struggle with the same issues and begin to relate with one another and the class becomes a safe haven for the teens. They become like a family and realize they have more opportunities than just living beyond the age of eighteen.…
