John Proctor: The Tragic Hero John Proctor was born on October 9, 1631 to John and Martha Hopper Proctor in Assignton, Sufffolk County England. In 1635, he immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was just three years old, along with his one year-old sister Mary. He was considered a prosperous landowner, and occupied various offices of trust in the colony. When John Proctor, Sr. died, he left his estate to his son. In the year of 1655 John Proctor married Martha Giddons and they would have four children, but the first three would not survive beyond childhood. He was an honest, upright, and blunt-spoken man, but with one fatal flaw. His lust for Abigail Williams led to an affair and created Abigail’s jealousy for his wife, Elizabeth, which sets the entire witch hysteria into motion. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigail’s rampage through Salem but only if he confesses to his adultery. After inheriting a substantial fortune from his father, Proctor went on to become a successful Farmer, Entrepreneur, and Tavern keeper whose name was well respected in the community.
John Proctor was the first male to be named a witch during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. When the hysteria first began in Salem village, Proctor believed the afflicted girls accusing many of the villagers of witchcraft were frauds and liars. He spoke openly against the accusations and scoffed at the idea of witchcraft. It wasn’t until Proctor’s wife Elizabeth, who was pregnant at the time, was accused of witchcraft on April 4th and examined in court that John’s own witchcraft accusations came out.
